Toggling between 4g and 3g?

Hi, total smartphone newbie here (I went from an Audiovox 8910 to the Thunderbolt.. just a wee step up )

What would be the right setting to stay in 3G mode? EvDo only?
(so yes, confirming it works and I got the menu-- VERY happy to see this as the lack of a 4G toggle was a major disappointment, even though I'm in a heavy 4G area I don't need it all the time!)

I think CDMA auto (PRL) is right. You may not always be in an EvDo area.

i thought EVDO was the 3G data network + calls and 1x is pretty much only for calls.

When I have it on EvDo only, the 4G/LTE icon turns into 3G. CMA auto (PRL) also says 3g, but CMDA only just gives me signal strength bars (that seemed to maybe go into good ol' 1x after that).

There seems to be quite a bit of a lag when switching modes, and/or it doesn't always "catch". (my first switch from 1x to CDMA+LTE/EvDo auto just put me back to 3G, but then going to LTE and back to CDMA+LTE/EvDo stuck in 4G)
