Tones going back to default by themselves

I had this issue with my Rezound...

Ringtones and notifications resetting to defaults or actually switching to other ringtones.

The issue was corrected when I finally did a factory reset (through HBOOT, not through SETTINGS).

This did in fact fix the issue and it has never returned.... I know it's a different phone, but you never know...

I find this happens to me if i clear data/cache from media in apps section.

I'm guessing somebody would know if they were doing that, but perhaps there are task killers/cache deleters at work in the background?

That would be my guess

Well, just to chime in mine does it too... I had the same issue on my SG II Skyrocket. I always thought it had something to do with connecting it to usb, so i eventually just left the default alone. On the SG III the default is too quiet so I am still playing around...

(S2) nice i found this discussion could not figure out what the problem was never had this issue with my old BB's / and have always made separate personal folder for ringtones, notification and music and it was still happening i even added my most used notifications and ring tones to the phone memory just to see and same happened on both ics .03/.04

Some how my smart stay and touch sounds came back on today

Either way I turned them back of but it's just weird, especially since I'm running a Rom. Maybe all of our phones are possessed?

Lol is there anything in common with all of your phones?

My personal favorite is the "Guess what will break on your phone!" when installing boot logcat / dmesg because it would always cause 1 issue, different for each phone and sometimes each installation.

Mine did this once but I was using a task killer, uninstalled that and it hasn't done it since. Also I believe that these phones have an automatic task killer that also frees up memory when that gets low. Try using the installed app manager to free up ram. That seems to have worked on mine

I was having the same issue with a couple of ringtones stored in a folder on the ext SD card. But I discovered that what was happening was that if I remove that card and put it back the ringtones reset back to default. (probably something in the background discovers that those tones aren't available so it resets them). It has never happened if I don't remove the sd card.

I never remove my sd card and i am not running any task killer. Still havingvyhe same issues and yes mine also turns my touch sounds back on.

I have a Samsung Galaxy Blaze 4G, which got the ICS update a few weeks ago. Since the update, this problem has appeared. Each time I reset the device, the ringtone reverts to "unknown", but plays some sort of jingle. I have to select my preferred ringtone after each reset. I use a custom ringtone, but that doesn't matter. I can use one of the stock ringtones and it will still revert to the "unknown" jingle after a reset. The ringtone I use is in the internal Ringtones folder, not on the external SD.

Also, my default notification sound reverts to "Cloud" after each reset, no matter what I have it set to.

I don't use any task killer app. A bit of googling shows that this issue is widespread, affecting many models, with various configurations. The most commonly suggested fix is to move ringtones from the external SD to device memory, but it's clear that this isn't a general solution to the problem. From what I can tell, there is no known solution; it looks like an Android bug, possibly specific to ICS. I know I didn't have the problem on GB.

This happened to me at one point in time because I had an app (Audio Manager Pro) that was overriding my default notifications. Check your apps to make sure it is not resetting your notifications/sounds when using the apps. I had a couple of profiles set up that changed the ringtones. I reset my phone at least 3 times to try to fix it. Finally figured it out, happy camper now.

If an app is doing it, I haven't found it yet. I notice that if I get a call while the phone is on the charger, it also resets the ringtone.

I had this problem as well. I simply went to my apps, selected Zedge. Once the home page comes up, hit menu button and click the settings. At the bottom of the list I selected clear cache and clear defaults. I wouldn't advise the reset application as it explains that it will wipe everything from zedge off your phone. I guess it would be fine if you backed up on pc first, but not sure why you would take all off to only go back and put all back on....?!?! Anyway, doing this made my ringtone set re-appear under their respective titles. Not sure why this happened though, but it occured shortly after I yanked USB from puter without safely ejecting hardware....and I also had some unusual shut downs of my phone as well. I did remove my battery a few times in that time frame, so maybe that was part of it as well. Got me.... hope this works for you like it did for me. good luck.

@dukins thanks so much! This was driving me nuts but you helped me figure it out. Audio Manager Pro was giving me the problem. I just had to change the sound on my profiles and it fixed it.

I tried clearing the defaults and cache in Zedge. Reboot the phone (SSGII) the ringtone goes to the phone's default ring tone. When I set ring tones for various people in my contacts, the phone gets these right, just not the default! :(

I tried clearing the defaults and cache in Zedge. Reboot the phone (SSGII) the ringtone goes to the phone's default ring tone. When I set ring tones for various people in my contacts, the phone gets these right, just not the default! I also moved ring tone files to folder (first tier) on the SD Memory (not an external SD card), called ringtones. When I go into system settings and sounds to select the phone ring tone I now see duplicate ring tone files (one set with a number after them), which lets me know the original ring tones were in the right place. Darn thing keeps defaulting back to the stock AT&T ring tone! I also thought about my task killer, and killed everything a couple of times. No immediate affect on the custom ring tone. Over time, it just goes back to the default! Uggghhh! I am on the latest ICS 4.04 on AT&T SSGII Skyrocket. Suggestions??

Edit: I feel like a big goof... Profile Scheduler Plus was controlling my default ringtone per profile. Duh! Problem solved.!! :)

I also found out that even if I select another default ring-tone from AT&T, after reboot, my phone will go back to AT&T Firefly. I cannot even find this ring tone on my phone or the other default. media folder was empty. Supposed to be a folder media/audio/notifications/ringtones. No such animal. Anyway, even with the customization that Android offers, I can't use it...a programming bug in ICS 4.04 perhaps?

FIX

I resolved this issue for myself and 2 other people the same way. Any of the aforementioned methods may work (presumably if an app is the root cause whether it be a task killer or zedge-like app) but I found something interesting which was simple after some very complicated failures. Please note root is required to do this.
GO TO: Settings/Application Manager/All/Media Storage
SELECT: Clear Data
NEXT.....
Use a file manager like ES File Explorer or Root Explorer to...
COPY ALL FROM: /sdcard/system/media/audio/alarms + sdcard/system/media/audio/notifications + sdcard/system/media/audio/ringtones
PASTE IN: /sdcard/media/audio/ringtones
REBOOT and give the phone about 2 minutes to scan (if you have the ability to force an SD scan/read, do it).

You should now have access to all audio files in all applications which have notifications and changes will stick after the phone is plugged in, USB connected to a computer or restarted.

Good luck
