I have the same issue. I've tried a hard reset thining it was a rogue app that hijacked something, so I started with a fresh reboot after the 2.2 update. I figured I could add back apps until it hapened, it would at least help me narrow it down. Oly issue is it happened on the first boot, with no apps installed. There goes that idea...
It happens to me 3-5 times a day, it won't let me unlock it without hitting the power button to turn the screen off/on, need to go through that cycle like 3-5 times. Then when it does finally unlock it will randomly start pushing buttons like when I'm doing something (checking email, SMS, etc) it'll start acting like I've pushed a bunch of buttons (even had it delete 3-4 emails on me). Only solution is to hit the power button, which then triggers the lock screen issues.
I'm running stock 2.2, no root without a screen protector.
