I just got a email from Samsung saying they received an empty box. I'm going by the Fedex location I dropped it off at. Has anyone had this happen before? I know some phones have been stolen before, but haven't heard about the trade ins.

It's crazy how someone at Fedex or along the way can just take something out of the box, reseal it I presume. I've contacted Samsung and they said they would investigate, but I'm not sure what they can do about it.

Yeah, that seems to be the case (happening to a lot of people). I checked the FedEx tracking and it shows the weight of the item, so I'd think/hope they can see something was once in there.

Did the box you mailed back to Samsung have any indication what's in the box? Such has Samsung, lithium battery inside ect? If so that's a good indication for people to open it up and look inside and take what's inside. When it's my time to return I might use one of my T-Mobile boxes and use that to return my S21U. But I'm sure FedEx employees knows exactly what's inside and those boxes. I may want to get insurance when I send mine back. Btw I've neve had any issues returning my phones with T-Mobile and the USPS in the past, it must be a FedEx thing. Good luck with your return hopefully things will get settled.

The box I used for the tablet had that on it, but not the phone. Ones thing that happened is the fedEX lady asked what I was shipping. I thought about that after I left. They sometimes ask if anything is dangerous or perishable inside, but not specifically what I'm shipping.

I've had them ask me what I'm shipping and I refuse to tell them. This year seems bad for thefts. I don't understand because they can't use the phone can they? Once it's reported stolen. I also take videos of me putting my trade in into the box and I also video when I drop off to FedEx or UPS I just ask their permission to video and they don't usually care.

It's been happening a lot lately to people I might not send mine back and pay the extra 500 for the new phone

Yeah I should have just sold my S21 Ultra locally and no doubt would have got at least $700 (same as Samsung trade in) but without the hassle of shipping. I do that sometimes but this year was too busy and that thought didn't even come to my mind. Probably because I never had a problem before trade in until this year.

So you had an issue as well?

I sold all my phones on Swappa before, but I've had good luck with just trading them the past few years. Selling on Swappa is a risk also, because you don't know who you're selling to, or what lie they may tell, and give you a bad rating. I guess this was bound to happen to me sooner or later, with as many phones I purchase and trade in. Never had this issue before.

Like you, I thought nothing of it, but it's strange I had a weird feeling after the FedEx lady asked me what I was shipping. Hate to blame her because she may not have had anything to do with it.

The Samsung rep was really helpful. I guess they have video of them unboxing a empty box, but she said she believed I shipped the phone, and they were going to investigate it.

I shipped my trade in last Wednesday but it's stuck in transit and not delivered yet. Last it left a place in Oregon and was supposed to be delivered in Texas in Tuesday but current status is delivery date unknown. FedEx opened a case but they couldn't track where it is now. Either they are super backed up or someone stole the entire box in transit. They told to wait till next Monday and then contact Samsung with the FedEx case Id.

I have used swappa as well but even there it's a risk with shipping. I'm in Seattle area it's easily pretty easy to find a local buyer in Seattle area for me. Should have gone that route. I generally post on offer up or similar apps for local sale.

Any chance you get receipt from FedEx? Its there fault if you do. I never do drop off box or schedule, got burned before.

Yeah I'm debating this as well... not sending my trade-in in and just sell it and putting the money on the card I used to buy the s22.

Yeah, that's unusual. I sent mine back this past Saturday and they arrived yesterday. I'm shipping from Atlanta, but lately FedEx has been an issue these past few years. Depending how this all works out, I'm not sure what I will do next time. I'm definitely taking pictures next time.

I have never dropped off any box without getting a drop off receipt, don't care if it's $10 or $1000 item. Always best practice to get drop off receipt.

Yes FedEx acknowledged that it's their issue but the problem is having the run around working with Samsung customer care and their disconnected departments.

Once a phone is reported stolen it will no longer activate on a network but it hasn't done much to deter theft, even with Google Accounts locking the phone.

When I worked at Verizon it was far too common for people to bring phones in to activate that they bought off Facebook marketplace, Craigslist, etc just for us to tell them it was stolen and it cannot be activated.

And apparently black listing an IMEI as stolen does zero good in some foreign markets. Once device payment plans began Verizon had an issue with foreigners buying phones and shipping them to other countries without paying for them. Then another time I showed up to work to find smashed windows and police. Our entire inventory of Apple and Samsung products, along with 3 other stores in town, got robbed by a group from out of state. Their intent was to ship them to Africa because they were worth more money there and would still function after getting reported stolen. Unfortunately for them, they took an iPad we had just set up for a customer that was supposed to pick up the next day and got caught thanks to find my iPhone. LMAO

I know with USPS a person can get a signature confirmation insurance that way they can track who signed for it. I'm not sure if FedEx has such a thing but I might have to find out soon when it's my time to send back my phone. I'm not sure what to say if they ask me what's inside the box, so am I required to tell them? If I say I rather not say they may not take it or open it up when I leave, that's the scary part.

@qnet This has happened to me before with USPS. I literally handed the box to the mail carrier and it never made it. When you ego to Fedex, on the receipt I believe it should tell you the weight when received as it will possibly show on the shipping label.

It's ok if you tell in the store, generally the problem is in transit where things are moving from one transit point to another. At least from what I have seen. You should be fine at the source dropoff with dropoff receipt.
