Transfer data vs fresh install?

Replying to my own previous post...I went with the transfer cable/procedure and I came from a OnePlus N20 5G and all is working very good. No issues. It appears as if Google is starting to provide for a more mature OS experience.

Under most conditions I do a fresh install of all apps when going to a new phone ESPECIALLY with a new OS version! I think this can mitigate bugs and unexplainable quirks. However, I get tired of going through all the steps to do it that way, and it seems that Google backup is better today than it was a few years ago so I will probably let it all flow back and then deal with any unforeseen issues. YMMV
All the apps are freshly installed via Google play when you transfer. The transfer just tells the phone what apps to download. This was for my case when I transfered from s22u to 7 pro.

Interesting...if you are correct I did not know this. The only problem I can see is if for whatever reason the user chose to NOT update a particular app, then which version will be downloaded from the Play Store and installed?

I transferred from the Pixel 6 Pro and haven't had any issues. The thinking was to do the device transfer option while setup, and if I run into issues later I can always factory reset to start from fresh. Anyways apps get installed again from the play store on the new device even with transfer method, the app data carried over to some of the apps but not for every app, but that's dependent on the app developer if they have added support for this. Also, all your device settings like night shift, do not disturb settings, Pixel launcher layout, WiFi password and many other settings carriers over from old device. So a lot of advantage transferring from old device if you don't want to spend time setting up everything again.

PS: experience may vary depending on from which Android device your are copying from I guess. I copied over from Pixel 6 Pro, so didn't expect much issues because it's just another Pixel.

I've used the transfer cable in the past and my new phone would have the all settings transferred. Even my home screen would be identical. Not this time. I went from a 6 Pro to a 7 Pro. What went wrong?
Not sure what's happened there... I did the same transfer as you and everything came over, not just apps and home/lock screen but also screen web shortcuts I had created which had never transferred before.. All is fine

It may be something along the lines of what Apple does, where it only installs the appropriate version for the device and OS it's being installed on. That would mean it needs to be installed on the new device to ensure it's the right setup for it.

As for which version is installed - it would be the latest version.

When I get a new phone, I usually perform a fresh install of all applications. This, I believe, may help to reduce bugs and any other unforeseen issues. However, I'm weary of going through all the tedious steps to do it that way, and Smart Transfer seems to be the best option for sharing apps. I can migrate all of my applications in a few easy clicks without having to go through a lengthy process.

I always transfer apps and info from my prior phone to my new phone and I've not had any issues from the transfer to my knowledge. I suppose if I were having a buggy experience with my prior phone I'd do a fresh install but since typically things are working fine, I just do a straight transfer to expedite the process.

I always do a fresh install every time only takes me an hour tops.

I recommend a fresh install for those who are less technical, or experienced, with setting up a cell phone. This will, for the most part, eliminate possible bugs from being introduced and that are harder to find and squash! I allowed a migration from a OnePlus N20 5G to my Pixel 7 Pro this time and all is fine for me. I have extensive computer experience and many cell phones under my belt so I am not worried about setting things up properly. I saved a little time doing it this way. I believe the real issue is WHAT apps are you using that you want to migrate, and HOW MANY apps are you wanting to migrate. This I believe can be the biggest issue with any migration. The more 3rd party apps (some of which may be crapware) the more the danger of doing a migration. YMMV

I think if your old phone is working fine the Google transfer works fine, but doing a fresh install gives you a reason to delete apps you don't use(we all have them LOL)

I have a Samsung s21 ultra, and plan on getting a pixel 7 pro. If I transfer from the Samsung to the P7P will the Samsung bloatware transfer as well?
One thing I hate about Samsung is the bloatware, never used any of it and can't seem to delete it.

I believe that only 3rd party apps that you installed yourself are the ones that migrate over. Most of Samsung's bloatware apps run only on a Samsung phone so they are not relevant. The only way to truly delete any app is of you root your phone. Otherwise using ADB, or a GUI app that utilizes ADB can not only disable an app but it can also make it unavailable (suedo uninstalled) for the -0- (zero) end user which is you! The apps files still reside on the phone and will come back if you do a factory reset, but for all sakes and purposes they are gone for you and will not affect the phone at all. Don't worry about the amount of space they may take up because it is minimal and if you do completely remove them it will NOT give you more storage space because they reside in an area that you cannot access in normal daily use anyway.

You have the option when transferring to (a) transfer all apps, or (b) manually select what apps you want to transfer. By the latter you can simply omit anything you don't want carried over.
