Trouble Rooting LG Optimus V

I apologize in advance if I am posting this in the wrong spot. I am more than a little overwhelmed right now. My phone is constantly giving me full storage messages so I decided to bite the bullet and root it. I successfully rooted it and installed a custom recovery image but I can't flash custom ROM. When I reboot, I get the blue screen. Can anyone help me ascertain where I might have gone wrong here and help me figure out what to do now? I'm not at all tech savvy so I need instructions for a layman, please!

Phone off, press and hold home, volume down and power until LG flashes on screen
What happens, what recovery do you have?

What were the steps you took when installing your custom recovery? Sounds like it didn't take, so you'll have to try again. Can you boot back into your phone, or is this as far as it gets?

Follow Leslie Ann's guide In the stickies
very simple and easy to read and follow

OK! I now have Cyanogen successfully installed on the phone! Phew! I now need to download Google apps. I am unclear on which version to use. Am I supposed to find one specific to the phone because I don't see one here: CyanogenMod Downloads

Thanks! I know this is probably second nature to you guys but for me this was like doing something in a foreign language! :) I very much appreciate the help.

There are three different packages you'll consider: Cyanagenmod 7, Cyanagenmod 9, and Cyanagenmod 10. On your phone, go to Settings > About Phone and look at Cyanagenmod Version to see which one you have flashed (you didn't provide information on what ROM you flashed) and go from there.

I did this and it said "unknown." LOL Plus I couldn't get the Google Play store to work so I just flashed it with Bumblebee instead. I seem to be completely up and running now.

Can someone please help me, I've tried rooting my phone with gingerbreak it doesn't work I tried using another rooting system doesn't work I have no clue what to do because when I look it up it tells me my LG optimus cannot be rooted at all.
