Trying to decide on Nexus 6, Moto X or Droid Turbo

Just when I thought I had my options decided on, along comes the Nexus 6. Based on what I have read, is it fair to say that the Nexus 6 will be a Moto X but with all the niceties (less the bloat) that the Droid Turbo has?

So many phones coming out now that things are getting confusing and the lines are starting to blur.

It's between the turbo and Nexus for me but I think I've got to go with Nexus.

I don't think the new Nexus 6 will have all of the added features by Motorola that the Droid turbo will have. So if for an out-of-the-box experience you are looking for active notifications, gestures, touchless controls, etcetera you may be disappointed

It won't have any of those features. That is just for Motorola branded phones. The Nexus is a Google phone that just happens to be made by Motorola. I am still undecided on the Nexus 6 or Droid Turbo myself. The Droid Turbo has the Moto apps and features that I have come to know and love from my Moto X but being able to get another Nexus on Verizon is also a dream come true as well. Capacitive buttons don't bother me like other people it bothers. Android L would be on the Turbo shortly afterwards. It comes down to screen size, capacitive buttons, battery and camera. Those are the 4 differences I can think of (besides software) that I can think of between the two.

Love the capacitive buttons.

But if you want the bigger screen then get it. Your phone will recharge fast enough.

You can add the active display. The touchless controls probably not since this developer who recreated won't release it.

I'm still in a tough situation. If I end up getting the Droid turbo I'm still going to need a second device for viewing media for a long amounts of time.

What we need is a device like the PadFone or at least now that Motorola and Lenovo are together get some type of a Lapdock configuration back.

Knowing me and the fanboy that I am I will probably get the 360, droid turbo maybe even the Motorola hint too although it's probably overkill for the average consumer.

I'm not sure that for what I use a tablet for upgrading my Nexus 7 2013 to the new nexus 9 would be worth it.

And because I am so picky, I probably will not be getting the Nexus 6 even though it would provide me the ability to not need two devices. I am too addicted to Motorolas interface.

well, the nexus is going to have always on ok google. and theres also this tidbit in the lollipop features that im not sure what exactly it means: "Where supported by the hardware, your device will wake up as soon as you pick it up or tap the screen twice"

I am in the same boat, not sure which I am going to get. I had a Droid DNA and loved it but last Tuesday I shattered the screen. I am now back on my old Droid Bionic. For me the two deciding factors will be the price difference between them and if I want dedicated buttons or on screen buttons.

That's awesome. So it has x8 esque always listening w/o battery drained.

Sounds like there's definitely not active display but something like it with the picking up the device bit. Where was this posted?

What are the advantages of capacitive buttons verses touchless controls? Which one is better and why? Thanks.

Capacitive buttons vs on screen :

Well I honestly say it comes down to opinion...

But for me, immersive mode doesn't always work as it should.

On the droid maxx, the buttons took up space on the bezel. Otherwise wasted space....

When using apps that aren't full screen, ie Web browsing, you have full screen with all buttons and no need to Swipe up to make them appear or use pie controls.

You can use other means to customize what the three permanent buttons do just not their appearance.

The droid razr maxx hd didn't have them. I preferred the buttons on the Droid, droid 2, droid razr maxx, and Droid Maxx.

Also depending on the actual screen size, a hd video playing in full screen may have ugly letter boxes. My Nexus 7 2013 does this, yet my droid maxx does not. (caveat, my lg g3 will do full screen just fine no boxes)

But when in full screen in landscape, you have to Swipe from the right to make the on screen buttons appear. If the notification bar is on the top id prefer the buttons to pull up from the bottom.

Bottom line, they light up, easy to see, can attach silicone bumps to them for visually impaired, and they're always there. Just a piece of consistency. If the screen was 5.2" with on screen buttons, you've essentially lost nothing. But depending on your opinion possibly gained a non removable eyesore.

Not sure if there's a valid comparison between touchless controls and capacitive buttons. Basically touchless controls let you use your device while driving or bathing. Add in Commander and you can make your phone do anything hands free.

One really isn't better than the other. And each serve their own purpose.

I don't like the size or price of the Nexus 6 and was debating going for the Moto X instead, but the Moto X is only $100 cheaper and I lose wireless charging. I might have to wait to see reviews for the Nexus 6 instead of pre-ordering like I usually do. I'm always an early adopter but I also might wait until Lollipop rolls out onto my Nexus 5 to see if that can satisfy me for a while longer.

So, if you look at the Moto X, the controls are not part of the screen which is a plus. If you look at the Nexus 6, they are and that could be a pain. My Note 3 has the buttons below the screen so, they do not interfere with the screen, which is a positive. Sounds like when the buttons are part of the display its kind of a pain in the neck to use them and can also effect the image that you are viewing. Is all that correct?

For me, I am trying to decide between the Moto X and the Nexus. I saw that the Nexus might not have all the niceties that the Moto X has.

The nexus 6 has on screen buttons. Not capacitive like the droid maxx and upcoming turbo.

Which carrier are you with? If verizon I'd say try the turbo. If ATT, the moto X play (same as droid turbo just att variant).

You'll get better specs than the moto X 2nd generation. But it comes down to how you use your phone.

Your screen will be a tad larger. Are you OK carrying a bigger phone like the nexus 6? If you watch at least an hour or two plus per day of video, get the nexus 6.

If you prefer all the moto traditions and ability to create your own colored phone then get the new moto X.

If you're paying cash price for any of these or you're on t-mobile or whatever, buy a droid turbo and use that. You'll have no need to charge your phone for 2-3 days.

Most of all you'll have better reception with any Motorola than you will with Samsung.

Also if you end up with any of these three beasts, install Commander. Let's you do anything with voice commands.

I had my droid maxx configured to skip music tracks. That way when I'm showering and streaming music I can say, ok Google now, skip track, and it will play the next song on Pandora, play music, Amazon music, etc. Even if screen is off and not charging. Always listening is a great time saving feature.

The most thing I'm excited about with any of these awesome phones is the smart charge 2.0 ability built-in with the charger included.

Well. According to an Engadget article I just read, they say it does in fact have the ambient display feature. Which I guess is the pick up and double tap to wake up feature.

I was trying to find the app called Commander in the Play Store and could not find it. Is that the specific name?

Thanks

Based on what we know so far, I'd go Turbo or Moto X. I don't think I can use a 6" phone as my daily driver.
