Android Central Question

I realize that not all apps can be moved but I have many that can but for the life of me I can't find anything on my zte grand max 2 android phone! When I search it tells you to click on the app & follow couple steps to move. When I click on an app only options that appear are to uninstall or upgrade. Anyone know what I'm missing or where I can get better instructions?

What Android version has the prone?
The respective feature I think was removed in Android 6.0 , when a new concept "adoptable storage" was introduced.
On short you can format SD as "internal storage" and it will be seen automatically as an extension to the internal memory.
The drawbacks:
  • you can not control if the apps will be installed on SD or to internal memory
  • the SD card will NOT work on other phones, because it is encrypted. you have to reformat it, it means loosing data
Just search for "Adoptable storage" and android.

Are you sure you are looking in the application manager and not the Google Play store? I've never seen an upgrade option in the app manager, which is where the move to SD card option would be. I even just double checked with one of my apps that I know has an update, and the only options in the app manager are to force stop or disable (it's the Chrome app, which has no move option).

But in general, it's not a good idea to move the apps because SD cards are slower and not as reliable as the internal storage. SD cards are better suited to working media and other independent files.

Adoptable storage was an option available to manufacturers on Marshmallow, but not all of them implemented it and I believe it was since abandoned by Google due to the problems it caused. It wasn't really a recommended practice either.

@Mooncatt:

It was adopted (no pun intended) for 8GB and smaller phones, because not everyone can afford to get a new phone, and 8GB is hardly enough storage these days. But, as you said, it was a bad idea from the start. Even good SD cards, when written to constantly, will fail much faster than the eMMC storage in the phone. But people with 8GB phones are probably buying the cheapest SD cards they can find, so the cards don't last very long at all. (A lot of apps write their data to the directory in which the app is installed, so if it's installed to the SD card, the card gets hammered when the app is used.)
