Trying to transfer data from old Motorola phone to new

Hi
My son and I have both got new Motorola G50 phones
I have managed to transfer all my data from my old Motorola to the new one following the “How To” steps - very easy to follow and took about 10 minutes
Trying to do the same with my son’s phone, but when we get to the point where the old phone finds the new device, it searches but then comes up with the message “no devices found”.
I have followed the exact same steps as with mine, but it just won’t do it
The new phone advises linking the phones via a double ended cable (which I’ve just purchased), but I didn’t have to do that with mine.
I have no technical know how, so was pleasantly surprised when I managed to sort mine so easily and thought it would be the same for my son’s phone.
Our old phones are both the same models
Any advice please?
Should I just wait for the cable to arrive and try that?
If that doesn’t work then I really have no clue

Are the settings of your son's old phone the same as those of your device?

Welcome to Android Central! Can you give us a link for the "How To" steps? I'm curious to know what steps you followed.

Do you know if you were actually restoring your phone from one of your Google backups? If so, then it's possible your son didn't have Google Backup turned on for his previous phone, and therefore the new phone couldn't locate a backup to restore.
