Unable To Post Photos Using WhatsApp

I have a new Moto G6 phone and am unable to post a photo using WahtsApp that has been downloaded from another source (my camera) but get the message "The File Format Is Not Supported". Using an image taken with the phone it works OK. The files are compressed i.e. not too big and I've tried standard JPEG and PNG format without success.

I have successfully done this routinely with my old Moto G phone but cannot seem to find how to overcome this problem with the new phone (the WhatsApp app is fully up-to-date).

Any advice much appreciated.
