Unable to retrieve messages

I wasn't able to retrieve message because memory was full. I heard the notification go off twice so I know two messages attempted to go through. I fixed the memory problem and sent myself a test text and it worked fine. However I don't have the two missed messages. Shouldn't it have gone thru after I fixed memory or are they gone for good? Is there any way of getting them?
