Unable to set up new Samsung A3 2017 to google a/c - unable to get Whatsapp

I have Whatsapp on my existing Samsung Galaxy s3 mini just fine and trying to set up everything on new handset A3 2017. I do have a Gmail a/c with Google which I can access on my laptop just fine. When trying to access/acquire Whatsapp on new phone, I keep getting message 'forgotten your password'? 'log in again', etc. I've been basically 'going round in circles'! It will not accept either my gmail a/c with (correct) password or my most-used hotmail a/c. Any suggestions pls.? Most grateful, thanks.
