Unfortunately Google Play services has stopped?

But you were able to get through the Setup Wizard, and the phone boots up to a homescreen? What happens if you do another factory reset? Does it ask for the Google account and password of the previous owner at any point?

Yes I get a home screen. Can even get on chrome and surf. Same after another factory reset and no it doesn't ask for previous owner. I had to skip google setup in the setup wizard

Ok, this isn't usually a great idea, but go to Settings>Apps, tap the Menu button and select Show System, select Google Play Services, then Storage, then Clear Cache/Clear Data.

Allow me to introduce myself, I've finally found a solution to this problem.

After all my hard-work and research, I bought a new Samsung Galaxy S6 active and I haven't been able to set-up my google play store account because I kept getting "unfortunately google play service has stopped working" message.

If you follow these steps I will guarantee you, you WILL have your google account and play store up and RUNNING AGAIN. But you have to bare with this process and trust me.. I was trying to fix this issue for the past 2 days.

To start with, this problem has nothing to do with clearing the cache so STOP clearing the data and the cache, nor force stopping, nor putting your phone into SAFE MODE. The REAL problem here is the Google Play services app version is OUTDATED. Either the phone was purchased with it outdated or it just hasn't been updated automatically.... unfortunately if you do not have Google Play Services working you cannot update it through the Google Play store (which is where it originally updates from) because the play store is also outdated... so in other words Google Play services is the backbone of all other Google Apps such as Google Play store, Google Plus, Google Books, Etc..

HERE IS THE FIX in 10 steps:

1. You need to connect your phone via USB to a computer.
2. Make sure your device is able to transfer media files (or Files in general) using a File Manager that the phone normally has installed already to be able to transfer files from computer to phone and vice versa.
3. Go to settings > Lock screen and security (or something similar) > Unknown Sources (slide to ON position) (Click OK and agree to Allow installation of apps from sources other than the Play store). This allows you to transfer a file you will need to download later from your computer to move into your phone.
4. Go to settings > About Phone (or about device) > Android version (write your android version down) For example: 5.0.2 or 6.0.1, etc..
5. Go to settings > Applications > All > Google Play Services > (write your version down, INCLUDING the number series in the parenthesis)
6. There will be 3 numbers together in that series separated from a dash inside the number series in the parenthesis.. these are the key 3 numbers in the next step. For example (228-xxxxxxxxx) or (440-xxxxxxxxx) and it can be in the opposite form of (xxxxxxxxx-448). You need those 3 numbers write it down.
7. Go to this website Google Play services 9.4.52 APK Download by Google Inc. - APKMirror

8. With those 3 numbers you will be able to identify which correctly updated Google Play Services version fits your phone. It is like a puzzle. Follow the steps on the page to find the correct APK file. (Follow the XYZ method on the page and match the corresponding X with your android version and so on and so forth...) Make sure you find the correct Google Play services version for your phone or else it will not work.

9. Once you find the correct version, click on it, it will take you to the page where you can download the APK File. Click on "Download APK" Download it to your computer first and make sure you know where it is being downloaded to, THEN using your computer move the file to a file in your phone. Open your phones storage and look for a file, for example, "Download" is a file on the phone you can transfer it to which is what I used.
10. Go to your phone and look for that file. Click on it, it should be an APK file. When you click on it, it will open just like a .exe file would on a computer. Install it on the phone for the first time and you will be done.. You have now replaced the old Google Play Services APK file with the correct one and you should be able to access your Google Apps and Play store account WITHOUT any error messages when you set-up your Google play store account for the first time on a new phone or even on an old phone with this error message.

Hope this helps, It helped me. Any questions.. just ask. Thank you.

Hi
I have the same error with Google Play Services.
I only wish it was as simple as the 10 steps suggested above.

Phone is a Lenovo S850C
in the settings /about phone it says the android Version is 5.0.1 (more on that later)

I hand not used this phone for about 10 months and due to a charging problem with my other phone I needed to use it again .
First job was updating apps already installed and installing the apps that were not already installed.
This is when I got the error and I'm not sure what app update But I think it was Google Play Services. "Unfortunately Google Play Services has stopped " and I get this about every 5 seconds.
I searched for solutions and I tried the following .
1 .Clear cache from Google Play Services
2 Clear cache from Google Play store.
3 Disable Google Play Services
4 Uninstall Google Play services (could not do)
5 Uninstall Updates for Google Play Services (Could not do that )
6 Tried to install the Google play Services from APK Mirror and yes I read about the variants of the versions . So I fist tried installing the same variant as what was on the phone when the problem surfaced. Version 10.08.84 (034-137749526) But I also noticed that 034 variant may not be correct because my Android Version was 5.0.1 (more on that again) The reason I used the same variant was I was unsure of my phones CPU architecture and DPI. So I tried it and it did not work.
7. Because I had little or no data on the phone I next went for a Factory reset and erased the phone data as well. This stoped the error. I checked the version and variant and it was Version 5.0.84 (1259630-034) .then I installed some apps while I was connected to wifi and Google Play Services error returned. and I also realised Google Play Services updated automatically because I was connected to wifi.
8 Factory reset again . This Time I stayed off wifi and I set up my Google account using 4G data so I could download an App that would give me details about my phone CPU architecture and DPI. I succeed in down loading CPU-Z by Tulaidea from the play store But was unsuccessful in stoping Google Play Services being updated So the error returned.
CPU-Z gives lots of info about your phone and this is where it get interesting
It says Android Version Name : KITKAT
It says Android Version Code is : 5.0.1 (I thought lollipop stared at Version 5.0 ?)
For the CPU it says the instruction set is :armeabi-v7a,armeabi
For DPI it says 240dpi.
The Information just below is from apk mirror site on identifying the correct Variant of Google Play Services for your android device.
******************************************
App Notes:
To figure out the right version of Google Play services for your Android device, download*Play Services info*or go to*Settings -> Apps -> Google Play services, and look at the 3-digit sequence (let's use XYZ) in the parentheses:
* X defines Android version:
· 0 for Android <5.0
· 2 for Android 5.0 and 5.1 starting with Play Services v8
· 4 for Android 5.0 and 5.1 before Play Services v8, Android >= 6.0 after
· 5 for Android Wear
· 7 for Android 5.0
· 8 for Android TV
* Y defines CPU architecture:
· 1 for armeabi
· 3 for armeabi-v7a
· 4 for arm64-v8a
· 5 for mips
· 7 for x86
· 8 for x86_64
* Z defines DPI:
· 0 for universal
· 2 for 160
· 4 for 240
· 6 for 320
· 8 for 480
Notes:
· It seems that 7YZ builds became 4YZ with Google Play services v6.5. If you were on 7YZ before, you should now install 4YZ.
· It seems that 4YZ builds got split into 2YZ for Lollipop and 4YZ for Marshmallow with Google Play services v8. If you were on 4YZ before, you should now install 2YZ in Lollipop and 4YZ in Marshmallow.
Examples:
o 014 for Android <5.0 armeabi CPU 240 DPI device
o 438 for Android 6.0+ armeabi-v7a CPU 480 DPI device
876 for Android TV x86 CPU 320 DPI device

**************************************************************
So based on the above information
The correct variant of Google Play Services for my phone would be as follows
version code 5.0.1 = 2
CPU architecture armeabi-v7a = 3
DPI of 240 = 4
that would be a variant (234-xxxxxxxx)
Note the original variant is (034-xxxxxxxxx)
9. I factory reset again downloaded from APK mirror direct to the phone Google Play Services Version 10.08.84 (234-137749526) and this failed.I get "phasing error" There was a problem phasing the package . I download the file from another location and tried to install and again "phasing error" There was a problem phasing the package . and Yes I had set my security settings to allow installation of apps from unknown sources .
10 . I tried downloading the above file to my PC first and then moving it to the phone and then trying to install all with the same result. "phase error" There was a problem phasing the package.
11. then I tried downloading and installing variant (034-xxxxxxx) and yes No Phasing error and it installed BUT I then get "Unfortunately Google Play Services has stopped " !!!!

12 Unfortunately I'm running out of ideas.
On the topic of which android version I have I'm thinking it is not Version 5.0.1
reason being when I tap the version number (In settings /about phone) a few times (to reveal the version Easter Egg) I get the KITKAT Easter Egg. Also my model is S850C I can not find much info on the "C" variant of this model and most of the info I find is for S850 and it uses KITKAT.
I think the variant of Play Store Services I should use is 034 as It is the only one that installs and I'm thinking I do not have android version 5.0.1.BUT I have less then Version 5 meaning KITKAT...

13.I just tried installing the update for Google Play Store before I installed the update for Google Play Services all from APK mirror . Result ...play store went ok after installing Play Services I get the error again.

14 Next I will try to install a version of both Play store and Play Services that is about 10 months old and see if I can stop Play Store Auto updates.

Does any one have any suggestions I have not tried ?

WHERE IS THE FIX ?

.

Deiselfire136: If I met you in person, I'd buy you a beer. I only signed up to this website so I could write this post as you definitely deserve recognition.

I followed your instructions and followed the instructions on the link you had provided. I did require to download two lots of APK files for it to work. This then allowed me to access the Google Play Store App (I couldn't access it originally because it kept saying 'Unfortunately, [Gmail] or [Google Play Store] or [Google Play Services] has stopped working' and would close down on me. Sometimes in the Play Store it didn't recognise my Gmail account, so even hitting the 'RETRY' prompt didn't achieve anything).
I then was able to download the latest Google Play Services App and now my phone is able to sync.

THANK-YOU!!!
