I have a brand new S9+ ordered directly from Samsung. I have noticed that the AOD does not turn off automatically when the proximity sensor is covered. I tested this by covering it completely with black cloth on a table and waiting several minutes. I have checked my options and I have the pocket protection option on. The AOD dims, but does not turn off. The proximity sensor works normally for other things, like calls.
At this point, I'm not sure if it's a bug, specific to my model, or if it's a software issue. I really don't want to wipe just to test to see if it's an app/service interfering. I'm hoping someone else with a similar phone (read: Unlocked S9+) can confirm whether or not their AOD is going off when the proximity sensor is covered.
I had this exact issue with the S8+ last year and Samsung released an update to AOD that fixed it later. I'm hoping that's all it is. Since I literally just finished setting up my phone and logging into everything, I really don't want to wipe it, especially if it just confirms that there's a bug.
UPDATE: For anyone actually experiencing this, it was the dexterity and interaction setting under Accessibility that allows you to wave your hand over the phone to wake it up that was causing this for me.
