Do you guys think we'll see an improvement with this update? Considering its the first REAL feature enhancing software update, not to mention that it includes Froyo, I think its a possibility that we'll see HTC address the battery life issue.

What is your input??

I don't think it is safe to speculate at this point until it is released and tested.

This is my opinion.

Battery life is not going to be directly addressed in this next update but that doesn't mean you won't see some improvement. When I contacted HTC they addressed other issues by telling me they were working on an update but on battery life they just have me the usual tips about wifi, bluetooth, and bump charging.

Supposedly the guys running the leaked update are seeing a major increase in battery life and a more realistic signal bar indicator.

If you want super long battery battery life, the best solution is to ditch the undersized 1300Mah battery and get the 2150 or 3500Seido.
I think HTC really dropped the ball by putting a wimpy 1300Mah battery in this powerhouse of a smartphone!

@KB3MMX, yeah, i actually have the seidio 1750 battery, and i currently love the battery life that it is giving me. I was just thinking that it should only get better with this update coming in the near future.

First of all, you comment on this as if it's just an issue with the Droid Incredible. It isn't; nearly all modern smartphones (or, to use Google's buzzword, "superphones") have this. They all can last about a day, but not much more with the stock battery.

That's just the problem; battery technology hasn't kept pace with the demand phones have. Just today, I was playing with a computer with lower specs than my Incredible; it was 12 years old, and huge. It was a desktop, so it was obviously plugged into the wall. I think we've come a long way to be able to power a device with similar (or better!) specs that fits in the palm of your hand, even if it for just ~10 hours.

Generally speaking though, I noticed that those who applied the leaked OTA update mentioned noticeably better battery life. Will that be included in the coming update? I assume so.

better battery n more with update

I did the update and yes signal has jumped a little, not super but better
the big diff is the battery, I have all the same apps installed and my battery has tripled at least, before I would charge during the day and now with same amount of heavy use I can make it through day fine. (before-50% by noon) (now same use 80%-noon)
720p video is much better
really like the news app/widget
skype included by dont use
messaging app have more widgets too
overall very glad I did the leaked update, only thing missing is froyo
might flash a rom if a working fully one comes along
like the looks of cm6 but no camera and thats a deal breaker for me

Okay, first off, i'm not sure how many smartphones you've used, but within the past 3 years i've used 4, including the Incredible, and none of them got nearly as bad battery life as the Incredible. And just to clear it up, i'm no more than a moderate phone user, and yes the battery would NOT last the full day.

I do appreciate the last portion of your post, which directly relates to the overall question.

Thanks for the info Metal1! You've proven my theory! Looking forward to the official release!!!

I thought if any of the updates would address the battery issue, it would be Froyo. You don't have that, yet you are seeing a 3X battery increase?

Not calling you a liar by any means, just wondering.

And thanks for sharing!

+1 to this. I have the 2150, and its a vast improvement over the stock 1300. If you get one of these, its a given that your battery life will improve. If the first OTA update or the newer one with Froyo improve battery life through the firmware, then those batteries should improve the same way the 1300 does. Either way its a win.

smartphone battery

Not that I call it apples to apples ...but ...I have used smartphones for quite a while. My last, before the DINC was a BB Storm. I could go two days without charging.

Blackberries are not as data intensive as the Android/iPhones' are. Blackberry data is routed through BIS/BES not the cell carriers completely. RIM does not an excellent job streamlining data so even the 200MB data tier plan would be good for most blackberry users even if they are heavy users because they dont need the same amount of data that an android would need. That leads to worse battery life. And no blackberry has the screen resolution of the DInc or the Droid/Droid X. Taking even more battery life away.

Battery question:

I ordered a 2600MAH extended battery and back cover off of Ebay. I am always hesitant to order things from Hong Kong, but this time I did. It cost like $15.

I checked the seller's feedback, and all of the people who ordered DInc. extended batteries gave him a very positive rating.

How likely is this battery to be a complete dud? I am going to say there is an 85% chance it doesn't work at all.

I ordered 2 extra 1500 mah batteries with a charger and all 3 items were bought on ebay and came from Hong Kong.
I spent $10 with free shipping and everything works perfectly. The extra batteries seem to give me the same battery life as the stock.
Hope this makes you rest easier. For $15 how can you go too wrong?

I'm not sure what you're trying to say here???

That was my point exactly; every other smartphone i've had has lasted 2x longer, or more, than what my Dinc. lasted on my stock battery.

But like the next guy said, most previous smartphones don't even come close to the specifications of the Dinc.

Not just the specs, the technology is different. Like he said, Blackberry doesn't use data directly from the carrier like most phones do. So in android, you're updating your status on facebook and it takes 4 times as much battery to do so because on the blackberry it uses a different technology.

And with that said, my incredible will last until about 3 or 4 pm without a charge, then I need to juice it up a bit, get it to at least 50, then go the rest of the day.

I'm home a lot though so the battery life isn't THAT big of a deal. Yesterday was the first real test, as I was out all day and didn't have access to any charging ports. I took it off the charger at about 9am. I went out with friends and by 5pm, it was yellow. Not bad, but seeing as the people I was hanging out with ARE the people I text/ message via facebook and send pictures to, that wasn't really an accurate judgement of how my normal day would go.

Hopefully over the next couple of weeks the battery will get better. I've been doing 3 or 4 bump charges and I will do more. I am running the SkyRaider rom which has froyo.

As opposed the the other multi-smartphone user, I appreciated the reminder that we as humans complain about a lot of things that are just plain silly. I don't remember which comedian did the skit on it, but it was not only funny but made you think how far we have come in such a short time...yet we complain about all of the modern life-enhancements we have, such as flying, cars, cell phones, etc.

I had the same phone. But compairing:

Storm:
Qualcomm dual core ARM11 400MHz/ARM 9 279Mhz
196MB ROM
128MB RAM (Out of which we had very little of that to actually use for anything!)
No internal Storage
Low Res Screen (480x360 TFT)
3.2MP Camera single flash

to

Incredible:
Qualcomm SnapDragon 1000MHz
512MB ROM (We get to use it all)
8GB Internal Storage (We have 6.6GB usable)
Hi-Res Screen (800 x 480 AMOLED)
8MP Camera dual LED flash

Is far from not comparing apple to apples. That like comparing an Apple to the whole tree. The BB Storm if you take out all the data crap and just play a similar game has almost 2/3's less processor. So actually if your storm got 2 days and you Inc. gets only one technically it's an improvement. Not to mention all the other stuff.

Bottom line is battery tech isn't keeping up to consumer demands. We want faster longer lasting devices. They can give them, but we also want them smaller.....well they can't pack a huge battery into a smaller case....yet.

So will we see a battery life increase out of Froyo? Yes. Why? JIT makes the processor fit in twice the calculations per clock making the phone more efficient. Will it be drastic? Don't count on it. I think most guys who have tested and really looked into the battery issue have determined that the phone quits running off of wall power once it reaches a 100% charge. And if your phone is still on depending on what you have running, you will see it update and show 93-95% power after a few minutes. If this is so it is a hardware issue, that is timed by software. Will they fix it? I hope so.
