Update to 2.2 Froyo and Have ROOT the easy way!

Hopefully you didn't restore the data from 2.1 when you did the update to this rom. Just an idea I'm throwing out there. Froyo does not like data from a system process being restored from 2.1, IE sms, mms, system settings, cache etc.

I used Titanium to restore my backup apps and data (not system) per your post #9 in this thread and that's it... the process erased all of my sms, mms (seemed to erase) system settings as I had to set everything up again but it kept some data such as notes from Colornote, ToDo items from ToDo Task Manager Lite, ICE info from that 3rd party app, etc...

lol so what does that mean? it was just one random reboot so far, but I never had one before. Everything thing else seems to be perfect

Humm well it could have been a fluke. Next time it does it, if it does it, uninstall Handcent and reinstall it from the market. Other than that I got no clue lol.

Questions before trying this

Sorry for these questions but I need to make sure I know what I am doing before I try this. If I run into trouble along the way I need to know that I can get the answers I need to complete this. Wish I could just give someone my phone who knows how to do this and pay them for it but I guess I just have to try it myself.

1)When you say reboot does that mean to just turn the phone on/off or should I do a battery pull.

2)What and where is the root of my SD card.

3)when I'm ready to install Froyo where do I get it from. I have the update ready on my phone so do I just go into settings/phone info/ updates and install from there.
PS> I have a windows7 computer and was not able to update via ruu.

4)Do I install the rom manager from the computer or the phone.

I understand now that root is the directory of the drive of the sd card. So when you say place it in the root of the sd card it means to just drag it to the sd card or right click and send to what ever drive is for the sd card.

Do you need to install any drivers before you start?

Yes you will need drivers. If unRevoked cant' find the phone it will ask you about installing drivers and give you links if I'm not mistaken.

1) Reboot means to turn the phone off completely and start it back up. Or you can do a battery pull. It just depends on where you are at. If you can do it via the power button do it that way!

2) I know you have heard the term "the root of the problem" meaning the beginning of your problem. Same thing with SD cards, the root of the SD card is the beginning. The very base level, when you click in my computer on the drive letter to open it up, where it opens up to is the root level.

3) If you plan on having root don't use the update.zip. You will need to follow the link I gave to retrieved Froyo. It's in the steps read them.

4) ROM Manager is an APP for your phone that you can download and install from the market.

Downloaded and installed unrevoked 3.1 to my computer. Set up my phone for usb debugging and plugged into my computer. Selected disk drive as default type.
Now you say to start unrevoked 3.1. Clicked on reflash package and it opened up. Doubled clicked on the reflash file and unrevoked box opened up. It says waiting for device. Plug in phone and now and enable usb debugging.
Nothing happening.

I assume this is how you start up unrevoked 3.1

O.K I see I need the htc drivers. I will try to install them and retry.

Getting stuck in clockworkmode recovery. First try didn't install the hboot drivers but then I went into windows update and check off all the automatic update boxes which allowed the drivers to install. Now when I open up the reflash package and it starts up it stops at waiting for bootloader: make sure the driver is installed
Any advice?

too bad i updated it before i saw this- sucks! over trying to roll it back to 2.1, i saw the directions and i ain't that good. lol!! i'll keep an eye out the for the root from 2.2 i guess- great post though, very easy!!

Once I found your comment about formatting the SD card to FAT32, it was pretty much easy as pie. Well, except for the part where I kind of fubared the restoration of my Titanium backup somehow, but that was my own fault and I got everything essential back eventually anyways :)

Thank you so much for posting these instructions, Qazme! If I could, I'd click the "Thank" button about a zillion times.

LOL Thanks a lot Jesso, glad to see it helped you out a bit. Welcome to Froyo, Root, and openly goodness ;) Now go play with some ROMs when you get bored!

Thank you Qazme for this info. Although it took me a long time to get everything worked out ( only because I'm a noob ) I would not have been able to do this without your help. I wasn't going to download Froyo after hearing all the problems people were having until I was rooted and could get rid of a lot of the junk in it.
Which brings meto my next question. Can you possibly post an easy way to get rid of the bloatware and or steer me in the right direction of which apps I can download to get rid of them.
Thanks for the help

Do you have titanium backup? I would imagine so. Then open it, click the backup /restore tab then the app you want to get rid of. Click "wipe data" then un-install. Boom gone the easy way!

You can also use root explorer to delete apps and a few other. But that seems like the easiest way! Once you restart your phone it will be erased from the Titanium Backup list, until then it just appears greyed out. Also if you have the apps in your backup there is a batch script to remove uninstalled apps.

Check this thread for Crapware removal. I used the removal then edited the file to add/subtract apps that i wanted to remove or not from that list. Use Astro to search ".apk" in "/" and for additional apps on your device that you want to remove.

Is the root of my sd card a folder?

The root of your sd card is the base of the sd card itself.

Thanks a million for these instructions. This worked flawlessly for me. Now I have froyo, root and wireless tether. Very helpful!

Lots of noobery here. Sorry.

I have an evo on sprint. I love it. I'm rooted and running cm6 with froyo and all that.

Anyway, my sister is on verizon and ready to get a new phone. I told her to go with the Incredible and Ill root it when I'm back home for a visit. If she gets a new phone, will it have froyo pre-installed, or will I be able to use the directions here? If unrootable froyo is installed, is there an easy stock eclair .ruu that I can load so I can root?

Finally, once I follow all of these directions I should be able to flash cm6 with no special steps, yes? Is the cm6 for the incredible pretty much the same as for evo with respect to the user experience?

Thanks in advance for the assistance.

It will more than likely have Froyo already installed. By the time she gets the phone etc, the UnRevoked Team will have released 3.21 which roots Froyo and you can simply use that tool and go!
