Updating ACS Recovery to CWM 5?

While reading web boards, I came across a thread on XDA that says ClockworkMod 5 is available for the Epic (see [RECOVERY] ClockworkMod 5.0.2.7 BML Officially supported by ROM Manager for Epic 4G - xda-developers). Since I rooted using the instructions posted here in another thread, I installed the ACS version for custom recovery. So I have a few questions: should I update to this newer version of CWM? If so, how should I do it? I know there are directions in the XDA thread, but they're a bit hard for me to follow, being new to rooting and stuff. And they seem to push the use of ROM Manager for this and future updates to CWM, but I think it was suggested here not to use it on the Epic. So another set of instructions that might be easier to follow would be appreciated. I might have more later, but those are the main things for now (should I update, and how). Thanks for your help!

I believe the ACS version is backward compatible with CWM 5. I know I like the features of the ACS version so I will likely stick with it. If you are comfortable with the ACS, I wouldn't worry about switching.

BTW... The acs recovery you loaded is also a new version.

That new 5.x.x.x version of recovery is uncharted territory sorta speak. Its officially supported by ROM Manager from my understanding which is good because it will be supported for all future updates/tweaks/patches, etc... But for hands on experience being so new we are learning as we go using it.

As long as they stay in the same format (flashable zip) you should still be able to use the acs recovery. Is that correct?

I'm fine with the ACS recovery I have installed now. It's done what I wanted so far, and I imagine it will continue to work fine in the future. If there's no real need to change from it to the new CWM, I can leave things as they are. Updates are usually good though, so I was wondering about it. I'll try to keep an eye on things. I can probably find news here as people learn more about it. :) XDA can sometimes be a bit too advanced for me. Thanks.

Am not gonna speculate the differences between ACS + CWM5, except to say CWM5 is official + ACS is a beta release of CWM (both have worked well 4 me)............THIS is how I installed CWM5: (1) placed the CWM5 download from DRockstar's thread on SDX into my sd card; (2) downloaded ROM mgr from android market, then explored the interface a bit to familiarize myself w/ it; (3) downloded a new custom ROM --Legendary RC1 was my personal choice-- + placed file in sd card; (4) from ACS recovery flashed CWM5 file (choose zip fr sd card, run zip from sd card)...then booted to system; (5) opened ROM manager, flashed CWM5 --YES, 2nd time-- using ROM manager; (6) this would be a good time to refer to soft-key commands from DRockstar's thread on XDA (these are slightly different from ACS CWM) + also note: *under NO circumstances do you ever partition sd card from CWM5*; and, FINALLY in order to explore all of the above + flash a custom ROM using ROM manager / ClockworkMod5: (7) I opened ROM manager, selected 'flash ROM from sd card' (as previously intended, selected Legendary RC1)......then was prompted to select (your personal choice as need be here): to wipe cache / dalvik / system.......i unselected all three as I was on Legendary_v 4.0.1 + did NOT want to wipe anything...........then ROM manager flashed my new custom ROM for me, smoothly and w/ no hiccups.......that's it, that's how it's done.........One Last Thing: the gingerbread kernels work best w/ CWM5: DRockstar offers 'Clean_Kernel' for best performance of his recovery, as well as Nubernel_kernel ........... Legendary RC1 (uses Samurai-1.0.4, based on Nubernel) + ACS ICS + a few newer ROMs are known to work well w/ ROM mgr / CWM5 combination................hope this helps.

*edit* don't forget to view qbking77's how-to videos posted on DRockstar's thread.

Thanks for the info. I checked out QBKing77's videos and decided to update, since it was easy and it's used by ROM Manager, which now officially supports the Epic, as I understand it. Updating was easy -- just install the zip file from custom recovery. When I got ROM Manager, it didn't see it right away, so I used the flash CWM option in there, and now it's recognized. Even if I decide not to use that app, having the newer CWM will probably be helpful.

Shifting the topic a bit, one thing I noticed in ROM Manager's Download ROM option is that there are premium and free listings. The main difference seems to be that you have to buy the premium version of ROM Manager to download from the premium list. This is despite the fact that at least some of the ROMs in that list (I only checked a few) are available for free -- I already got them from places like XDA. I suppose there would be some advantages to paying for the premium app and managing them through there, but I'm not certain. I guess I'm still trying to figure out a good way to manage ROMs, backups, etc. I know some options, I just haven't really used them to know what works best.

I thought some people might be interested to know that ACS Recovery has been updated -- see [ACS][Recovery]ACSRecovery5 1.0.0.0 - xda-developers for the new version based on CWM 5. I haven't installed it yet, but it looks like it could be flashed in CWM, the same way I put CWM over ACS recovery before. I'm not quite sure if one has an advantage over the other, or if the ACS version if compatible with ROM Manager. If others have more info, please pass it along. Thanks.
