my sprint plan is elligible for an upgrade and I will probably upgrade my HTC EVO 4G tomorrow but I was wondering what will happen to my EVO...?

after I activate a new phone on this ones line will I be able to still use it like a tablet with wifi only?

Is there anything that I should do first before I go to the sprint store and activate a new phone on this ones line?

Thanks in advance for all your help, I really appreciate it!!!

You can still use the EVO 4G as a tablet. Everything, except for making calls, texting and voicemail, will work. There really is nothing you need to do if you are keeping the phone.

You could even still make calls and text with a Google Voice number and Groove IP app over wifi.

thanks, that is what I was suspecting...

IF (and that is a HUGE IF) this device were to ever get another update in the OS would I be able to get that and do it over wifi? or does it only come from the carrier? right now it is running android 2.3.5

also at this point I will be seriously considering rooting it, can't wait to try that out. :)

thanks again

It only comes with the carrier. First, the carrier verifies the phone is Sprint and that it is version X.X.X, and after that, then it pushes the OTA. Simply put, no, you won't receive new software.

if an OTA update became available for your evo, you could reactivate your evo onto sprint, download, update and then activate your new phone onto sprint (pretty sure you can do all this on sprints site). It is like swapping SIM cards on gsm.

Don't really see the OG Evo getting any more updates from Sprint. It's an EOL device. Why not root it and play around with all the different Roms and themes that are available?

Well, not true, Sprint updated their HBOOT, which made it tougher to root and whatnot. :-\ But you are totally right, there are many ROMs out there to find your flavor, whether it be GingerBread, ICS, or CM! :D

The last major OTA was in January. The one this past summer was a minor update but didn't close any exploits for rooting. This phone is too old for any major OTA updates.

All I know was that it made it difficult for me to use the RUU that I had for it.
