Usb-c to 3.5 plug

Just realized, rather than using an adapter cable, I looked for an actual USB-C to 3.5 plug cable. Obviously this doesn't help for devices that have a 3.5 plug built-in, like headphones, but I realize this is a better solution than using an adapter cable for those instances where you're just using the cable as a patch from your device to the phone - like connecting your phone to the aux input. I was surprised to find very few on Amazon

I too would be interested if there are any viable options. However, I think the issue here is the same as with cheap USB C to 3.5mm adapters. You'd need to find a cable with some kind of circuitry in it that will allow analog audio to pass through from a USB C connection to the male 3.5mm end.

The cheap USB-C to 3.5mm (female) adapters I have bought do not work on the Pixel (and won't on the Pixel 2 I understand) because they don't have this built in circuitry like the Google included dongle will.

I suspect the same issues will arise with cables (instead of adapters) unless the required circuitry in in the cable.

I didn't even think about the signal conversion issue. If somebody came up with a cable that did this, instead of an adapter, I'd spend the extra money on it.

The ones with Amazon are definitely not designed for newer phones in mind (if you read reviews they don't even work on the old Pixel or other USB C phones).

I would imagine that after the release of the Pixel 2, we'll see more USB-C-to-3.5 mm dongles that actually have the appropriate hardware inside and work with the Pixel, seeing as the phone is biggest phone to release without a jack. Just a matter of time before it becomes more popular.

The phone comes with one already (USBC to 3.5 mm), though if you're looking for another, I think you'd have to wait until more reputable third-party ones are released. (The existing ones on Amazon don't seem to work with Pixels). It's not a double port like the one of the store though.

Ahh, no no, it doesn't; it just comes with a solo C-to-3.5 mm adapter, and a separate charger cable. I'm not aware of other third-party dual adapters like the one Google is selling that actually work as intended (there are few out there, but may be questionable). I'm sure with the release of the new Pixels that more companies will make legitimate, functional, and cheaper ones.

I too would be very interested in a this. Has anyone tried one of the generic ones? I might give it a shot, they’re only $10 or so. I have a Bluetooth adapter for my car but with BlueBorne I’m still leery. I know the phone is patched, it my adapter is not.

I use bluetooth all the time except in my car which does not have that technology. I have a 3.5 mm cable rigged to my car radio so I can stream music, podcasts, or Audio books. During long drives I use google maps so I need a charging option also. Would prefer to not pay google $50 for their adapter.

For $50 I can get this which will allow my car radio to get bluetooth from my pixel when I plug its 3.5 mm cable into it. Thus allowing me to charge the phone at the same time.

I can confirm that the Pixel 2 requires a special adapter. I got a 3rd party 3.5/charging adapter and the phone sees it as an "analog" accessory and will not run sound to it.

I got this one. It appears to pass along a charge, but the phone won't let it play audio.

Even the 3.5 adapter that came with the phone seems kinda buggy. Unplugging it there's a loud electrical "pop" like some power is being sent to the headphones. Rather unsettling.

Turns anything with a 3.5 mm cable into a bluetooth device. Problem solved.

I tired this one below from Amazon and it does not work at all. It doesn't change and auto doesn't work. I also tried this one in several another devices like my HP laptop and it doesn't work in any of them.

The Pixel doesn't require a special adapter, it requires an adapter that actually follows standards. The USB-C to 3.5mm adapter that came with the Pixel has worked in every device I have tried it in, including my HP Elitebook x360 which is a windows laptop.

Whereas adapters like this one below has not worked in any of my devices.

The USB-C port on some device might only support the digital audio output mode, which make it necessary to use a digital-to-analog converter in order to send audio output toward earphone or speakers that can only accept analog input.

So, best I can tell, it appears that Google did not support the optional analog mode, and instead included (and is selling) a more expensive digital-to-analog converter adapter. This is the reason the cheaper adapters on Amazon don't work (both just the 3.5mm adapters and the adapter/charger combos).

I would buy the Moshi one but only if it came in black. That thing will look ugly on my Black 2XL with black headphones.
