USB Charging Cable

The cable supplied with the phone works fine with either the charger or a USB port.

I bought three new cables (one for work, one for home, etc.) advertised to work with the EVO but they don't. (NEW High Speed USB 2.0 Cord Data Cable for HTC EVO 4G - eBay (item 390207054789 end time Jul-09-10 15:38:03 PDT))

I plug the cable into the EVO and the charger or a computer USB port. The amber light on the phone comes on for a couple of seconds and goes out. If it's plugged into a computer USB port and I can hear the sounds, I get the "connect" sound followed by the "disconnect" sound after a few seconds.

Has anyone had good luck with non-HTC micro USB cables for charging the Evo's battery?

The fit of the micro USB end seems ok. Just to test, I removed the Body Glove case and got the same problem. (That is the micro end of the cable seemed to seat properly with and without the case.)

not all USB cables are charge cables and not all USB cables are sync cables. if you want both you need to make sure they specifically say "charge and sync cable".

i only buy Sprint or HTC OEM.

Best Buy sold me a RocketFish cable when I got the EVO and it won't sync...now why would they sell that when they specifically knew I would be syncing to Outlook (bc I told them I would be). Fortunately it had the micro-usb end that i could use on other cables i had in the house.

I think it had something to do with the update.....i had one that worked fine before the update, but since then same thing happens with mine...amber light comes on and then goes back off.....was working fine before that update the other day, but an hour after plugged my phone In and it didn't work. Still works on my tour but won't on my evo....who knows!

My micro USB cables from monoprice are touch and go. They don't charge when plugged into the wall (but that could be the fault of the AC adapter which was also inexpensive).
EDIT: They also don't charge when plugged into my car, but again that could be the adapters fault as I haven't swapped cables around trying different things yet.
They charge and sync when plugged into the PC but I have had one or two issues where the amber charge light would come on, then go off a second or so later. It doesn't happen all the time but it happens.

The HTC branded micro usb and wall adapter work perfectly and charge quickly.
The Samsung wall charger (one piece) works perfectly.
The Palm micro usb cable and wall adapter work perfectly(from a Palm Treo Pro).

You are having the same problem I am having in the other USB thread: EVO connect to USB LINK

I am using the supplied HTC cable and the Evo is not recognized, but I can connect the Samsung Moment android phone and it connects with no problem.
