Use only as a standard mobile

Thanks to help from sfoLAX I have my J2 set up to use home WiFi only I.e. data turned off - so far so good, I now want to set up to use only as a standard mobile when I am out of range of my home WiFi, will that setting (data off) do the trick or do I have to make further settings, I am on pre pay so I do not want to use data. Also sfoLAX showed how to set up ‘do update only via WiFi’ ….. but I can’t get the right options to show/choose.
Any help appreciated
