Hi, I live in the UK and I've been so impressed by the praise so many people have for the Nook colour that I decided to stump up ?200 to import one. Now I'm waiting for it to arrive I decided to look up the details of how to root it, and it mentions registering it with B&N before I begin. I probably should have checked this before ordering, but is it possible to register the NC outside of the US? And if it's not, is it essential, or can I live without registering it (especially since I have no real intention of using the stock OS since B&N ebooks aren't accessible in britain)?

I think registering just associates a nook device with your B&N account.

If you are just gonna hack it up I would imagine it doesn't matter.

Thanks, I guess I'll find out soon.

Another thing I didn't think of is to do with charging it. I didn't realise it didn't charge off USB like my phone does, so I'm going to need a wall adaptor. Can I get away with just a simple plug adaptor or is the 240V we have here going to fry it? I would rather avoid buying a step-down transformer if I can avoid it.

As long as you're using the NC's proprietary micro USB cable, it seems like it does charge off USB.

At least running Honeycomb off a SD card, I'm sure I've seen the charge level go up while I was using ADB over USB to modify some of the internals of my NC.

A regular micro USB cable can't charge the NC, though.

Not true. The Nook never seems to report it is being charged but it will charge on a regular USB cable. It is slower than using the adapter it comes with but it works, I do it all the time. Just plug it in and you will see the percent go up if you use a battery widget.

If you are in the UK just use a USB adapter that you would normally use to charge anything else. It is already adapted for 240AC to 5V DC.

It is weird that you guys use double the voltage for everything. :)

don't worry about registering the device, I Live in Sri Lanka, got a nook color and I've successfully registered it. Only thing as you said is that you can't use Barnes and noble store to buy books. they sell only to people wth US billing address, sadly.

I just checked my NC stock charger, and it is rated 100 - 240 VAC, 50/60 hz, so you should be fine with just a plug adapter.

I don't think the BN registration makes any difference, only for the book purchasing.
