Using Hangouts for SMS/Texts/MMS is really going to take some getting used to

I never even tried it. I tried google + photo to back up my photos and once I deleted them from my phone, they deleted on G+...WTH...so I stopped using that and do not want stuff forced on me.

I installed 8SMS and it is just like stock, so I am happy.

I discovered Sliding Messaging after running into the same problem (disliking SMS integration in Hangouts). It's the most feature rich and attractively designed SMS app I've ever used. The GUI looks like it was made by Google, it's fully customizable, and there are Reply/Read/Call buttons in the Android notifications.

Hey all. Sorry to butcher your Nexus 5 thread. I side loaded the hangouts sms integration on my note 3. I was using handcent yesterday without an issues. I read this thread, Deleted handcent and then downloaded textra. I am getting notifications only through hangouts with notifications unchecked, and receiving nothing on textra. IN FACT, textra is not even acknowledging the texts received or sent via hangouts, and yes the texts are SMS to iPhones. Any suggestions? I guess I will have to uninstall the hangouts update?

Have you figured out the way of getting MMS to work with Sliding Messaging... I do prefer it over Hangouts, because of how many features it provide, but I use Hangouts merely for MMS because I can't get it work for Sliding Messaging. I have a Galaxy Note 3 using AT&T..

i can't figure out how to force list people in the "People you Hangout with" List. i attempted to "Hangout" with a bunch of people and didn't connect with any because nobody has hangouts (just Gmail) - and that's fine. but only 2 of the 12 people show up in my List. - why just those 2? i care about populating this List for SMS purposes! and to push down the "Suggested" list. any ideas? i wish Google would make that list "Frequents" and include SMS. any solutions??

Tapping the Automatically Select APNs in settings fixed MMS for me.

I did that... And I still get errors. I don't mind using Hangouts.. I like it, yet I would rather have MMS to work with Sliding Messaging.

You may have to enter yours manually then.

The top two lists are related to hangouts, suggested is garbage for me too but it's so low that it first matter. The slide out history should already be a list of recent conversations. That's at least 20 conversations that it's easy to jump back into, sorted by latest conversation.

i immediately delete my SMS/Text conversations. so this doesn't help me. i don't like the way they set it up. it should be "FREQUENT SMS/HANGOUTS PEOPLE".

There is a feedback form within the app, but I believe it's currently set up as a hangouts app that has the ability to send and receive sms/mms. A lot of the functionality you're requesting would potentially diminish the prominence of hangouts, but for users like yourself that aren't using hangouts anyways, having the options would be good. A generic, frequently contacted list.

OT- not sure, it seems fine via tapatalk but I've been having desktop issues for awhile. Also, please refrain from typing in a way that circumvents the language filters. If its really bad there is a site feedback section in the index.

This might be obvious, but: have you made Textra your default SMS app? I've been using it without any issues.

Speaking as a new Android Convert I am enjoying the phone so far but this Hangouts thing? Not really a big fan. I miss the ease with which my iPhone would use iMessage and I also miss being able to assign custom text tones per individual; I mean who DOESN'T think their wife breathes like the Dark Lord of the Sith (Darth Vader). Been cruising the app store so far today looking at an alternative that will A) look better, B) allow me to assign custom text tones.

Textra, Handcent and Sliding Messaging will do that. Many others will, as well, but a few have yet to be updated for Kitkat.

well on second thought my 2 are listed as "SMS" contacts but i am limited to 2. i see you have only 2 listed as well. is this true? i concluded that my 2 were attempted hangouts because ive been texting many many people and only these 2 show up. is the App limited to 2 SMS contacts?????

I have a few more SMS contacts listed in that section further below. Those were the only two that showed up in that screenshot.

I have found how 8SMS can use custom sounds for each person's phone calls but I sure would like to know how to have unique sounds for texts under 8sms. I am starting to think it has assigned my Notification light to flash different colors depending on facebook, texts or emails. At least I think 8SMS has done that but don't see how to change the colors myself.
