Using Hangouts for SMS/Texts/MMS is really going to take some getting used to

i just can't understand why my "People you Hangout with" is limited to 2 SMS Contacts despite texting at least 10+ people so far. and as a side note my LONG PRESS "Hide Contact" doesn't work either.
i'm trying to think of all the variables - i wonder if it's because some have G+ profiles and others do not?
Textra is wicked. Exactly what I was looking for. Very surprised it is free. Thanks for the tip!

imessage is still the best for sending pics and videos IMO. Android just does not have anything I have seen that can replicate the features of imessage especially with video.
I've been playing with Textra for the last hour or so and I have to say that it far exceeds iMessage. I've been a diehard iphone fanboi for years but this app, which is totally free, rocks.

you can send a video of say 30 seconds? does the recipient need to have textra as well?
I haven't done 30 seconds yet but I did up my limit to "NO LIMIT" in Textra for MMS as I know my carrier has no issues with limits etc.
Options for me for sharing video are Facebook, Google+, Drive, Dropbox, Bluetooth, Picasa, YouTube, Gmail and Tumblr. The easiest way seems to be to upload it somewhere and then send a link to the person you want to view it. My 19 second video in 1080p is 38.8MB.

Might be something to the g+ profile. It looks like all mine showing up as SMS I also have added to my circles and are part of g+. But when I get a chance I'll look further because I'm very curious of this now.

well i just tested this with a contact i know has a G+ profile and has me in her circle. i sent her a test text and she did not stick to my "People you Hangout with" List.
OK i SOLVED it. but it makes no sense to me. no rhyme or reason.
1. Attempt or Accomplish a real "Hangout" with someone that has a Gmail address. Let the call go all the way through until answered or not answered (stop).
2. Repeat #1 with as many people as you want.
3. Go into Settings-->Apps and Clear the Cache/Data of the "Hangouts" App and also Force Stop it.
4. Start up the "Hangouts" App and the people you did/attempted a "hangout" with will appear in "People You Hangout with" List with an "SMS" next to them. although one did not have the "SMS" next to it for some odd reason.
they won't show up in the List until you do the Clear Cache/Data. and some you can do "Hide Contact" via long press and others it has no effect.
only trying to do a Hangout adds people to List. Texts/SMS does not add anyone.
so what does this tell me? it tells me that the Hangouts App is in F'ing BETA.

Being that this is the first time the combined SMS + Hangouts I am not surprised at all that it would be in a buggy state.
Do you mean video hangout with this? I'm not clear on what it means to "let the call go through".
yes. is there any other kind of Hangout? i really don't know im kind of confused about exactly WTF defines a hangout.
99% of my usage is basically treating it as an IM service. It basically replaces the need to send SMS with people that have the app, and then SMS is only needed for those that do not. The video chat, screen share, etc functionality is much less frequently used. I think that's why SMS seems relatively seamless integration to me, because I've already been using hangouts and not much at all changed from my end in how I communicate with people, other than now I need 1 app instead of 2. The look/feel and most of the methodology is identical.

Wow.... It really isn't complicated. People you HANGOUT with is a list of people you hangout with (or at least had started one with regardless of if they replied) not a list of people you SMS with.
It's not a complicated system that requires you to be standing on only one leg while you send a message or say any spells or go through a 4 step process.

1. it requires a clear cache/data of the App for them to show up for me.
2. it SHOULD include SMS since it is one integrated SMS + Hangouts App.
