Using the Nexus 7 as an (almost) daily driver

N7 is how I get my media content consumption (G+, Currents, YouTube, gaming, etc) in the mornings and when I get home from work. Once I get more comfortable with Tasker (still fairly new to Tasker and the whole Android scene in general) and start setting up badass profiles for both my N7 and my GNex, it'll just bake itself into my life even more.

Not to hijack, but is Tablet Talk the best app in that category? Any other recommendations? Did a quick search but I'm at work so it's tough to browse too much :(

Tablet talk has been working great for me, and I haven't found any other apps that can match it. The developer gives you a 24 hour refund if you contact him. The only thing I wished it had is MMS.

Anyone use the N7 for handwriting with a stylus?

Re: Using the Nexus 7 as a (almost) daily driver

I've read a lot of threads here, and on the CrackBerry forums (I have a PlayBook too) where people say they take it everywhere, or it goes where they go and never leaves their side.

My question is: what do you do with it? Do you take it with you just to have it? I have a hard time seeing myself taking it into a grocery store, or to my local AutoZone. Last Saturday we went out to eat, and I thought about bringing it just to bring it, but how rude it would have been for me to pull it out while at dinner with my girlfriend.

Then there is the tethering issue. I can tether to my Galaxy Nexus, but is it worth it just to do price comparisons while standing in Lowes or Home Depot? I'd just use my phone.

Anyway, just curious if people that have it with them 24/7 actually use it, or just like to have it with them.

I too have a PlayBook and just received a free Nexus 7. Prior I would always carry my Playbook with me because I had it bridged with my Torch. I would always have it with me for my daughter as a distraction tool. Now I have my Nexus now I have something to use while my daughter is watching a movie or drawing on my Playbook.

Apps in constant use are;

Evernote
GO41cx (HP41 calculator emulator - translates well to the big screen :) )
Kindle
Wolfram Alpha - I have this on my phone, but it's dense keyboard is a lot better on a tab

It's a nice Swiss Army Knife for an engineer. It's not a laptop, not even close. Not tab ever will be. But as a general purpose reference tool it's great stuff. And it keeps me entertained.

The Microsoft surface might be the tablet that is actually a laptop, but after getting the nexus 7, the surface no longer interests me. I know that these are two very different tabs, but the n7 is just so much more portable than the surface, and can pretty much do the same things.

From many of the posts I've read from the gazillion forums I frequent, it seems IMO most people just "take it everywhere with them" simply because it's 7" and fits in their pocket. My GT10.1 doesn't fit in my pocket and when i take it with me it's not always ideal to use it even though I may have it so I guess I'm missing why it's so exciting to just carry your N7 around.

What the heck kind of pants do you people wear?

I would never take it with me everywhere anyway because for it to be useful you need to have a phone with you anyway. Why wouldn't I just use my phone when I am out and not worry about carrying two devices everywhere?

That's why I asked what I did. Thought maybe I was missing out on something by not taking it with me "everywhere". I just can't imagine whipping it out while I'm doing my daily routine out and about. While it is more portable than my iPad, I can't see using it in place of my phone while I'm out.

Bigger screen, it just makes things more enjoyable. You don't exactly need a phone anyway. You can use a mifi hotspot or the WiFi network at the cafe or work building.

Unless of course you have a mifi and a crappy minutes only phone plan.

You know I see enough people whip out their iPads to take pictures and it does look ridiculous.

I don't have mammoth pockets and this sure would not fit in a jean pocket. Phones are still better suited as a daily driver. Honestly the perfect size for me is if you cut the nexus 7 in half and give it SD card and HDMI function...

Totally agree! I see people holding them up recording video too, looks ridiculous like you said. Some people think the pic or video will be bigger because they took the pic on a bigger screen.

Re: Using the Nexus 7 as a (almost) daily driver

I've had an extensive hands on with one and I can't get past how terrible fonts look on it. I can't imagine trying to use it as an ebook reader. How can a high res screen render fonts so blurry ? Is the pixel count low ?

I believe it has the next highest pixel count behind the retina and the transformer infinity, and not by much, like 216 PPI? EVERYTHING on mine looks fantastic. I use both the kindle app and the Google books app. Both look amazing on the N7. Maybe your extensive hands on was with a lemon?

Troll perhaps????

I am having no issues whatsoever with the display on my Nexus 7 and I use it all the time.

I actually think the display looks better than my Transformer Prime's display.
