Using the S-Note

I have been using the Galaxy Note since February and I believe it to be the best all-in-one device on the market.

What I like most is the note taking capabilities, and I use the Note exclusively in meetings. Up until the recent ICS upgrade I used S-memo but today I decided to try S-Note to see if there was any distinguishable difference in the two apps.

Well, I discovered that in S-Note I could not only take handwritten notes but I could record the meeting simultaneously. I thought to myself this is really cool. This feature will come in handy if I miss anything, and need to go back and listen to an audible recording of a section of the meeting.

However, I quickly learned, to my surprise, that the recording shuts off when you add another, or go to the next page? Therefore you need to restart the recording with each page of notes. This is a weird way for the app to operate if i must say so. It seems the recording should keep going until you press stop? I mean; "I'm just saying.?

So for those using the Note to actually take notes like I do, I thought I'd share this information so you're not surprised like I was.

Das, I understand your frustration at the new features having to be discovered and then not working they way you think they should. I've been playing with the Note feature but didn't know the recording would be for individual pages. I just spent a half hour on Samsung's site trying to find an update to the manual with no luck. Tried customer support chat where I got vague responses and finally an offer to trouble shoot and then silence. When I asked if he was still there after 2 minutes and still got no response I left and resumed fumbling around on the site. There was a terrific section called tips that worked like a slide show that shows some really wonderful features for photo editing, creating real postcards, all sorts of new things yet nothing that can be saved for future reference on our Notes. When I first got my phone I constantly opened the manual and was still frustrated the 200 plus page manual didn't cover it all. But I learned how to do the things I wanted to do. Now I have to re-learn stuff. I was really frustrated when I couldn't do a screen shot today when I was trying to show off my Note to an iphone fanatic and neither the hand swipe nor the two button squeeze worked. The browser is different. ARGH, Thanks for sharing how something works! How was the audio from the recording? Did it clearly capture someone speaking from a distance? I've been impressed at how well it records me in the car but haven't tried to record a meeting yet.

The recording quality was fairly good. There were six of us sitting around a conference table and I was able to capture the voices pretty well.

The funny, yet weird part, was that I missed sections of the meeting as I transitioned from one page to another and had to remember to restart the recorder.

I'm finding little features here and there, but it would be nice to have a comprehensive manual that explained every nuance of the device.

Granted most stuff people will never use, but it would be helpful to know it exist.

Btw, are you pressing home + power for the screen shot? I was incorrectly pressing volume down + home and had all but gave up on it.

Even with these challenges I still believe the Note is the best all-in-one device on the market.

Nice to know about the recording quality. I know I'll find future uses for that! The problem with no documentation is there are features we'll never use because we don't know about them! Um, hate to state the obvious but maybe the solution is a second Note just for recording. I think there's a cheaper solution. I swear I read somewhere about being able to use the S pen now to write in something other than the memo or note apps. I just tried it in email but that didn't work. If I run across it again I'll let you know. I've been doing a lot of searches on the new features so heaven knows where it was! Would the recording keep going if you multi task to a different app? I do think multi tasking is working much better with ICS. If someone would develop an app that would make the phone scream if the stylus got too far away, and would turn off the search button at the bottom when using Memo or Note, the Note would be beyond perfect! Do you write in landscape mode to keep from hitting that or have you found a different solution to write and not have that pop up?
BTW. I used to use the hand swipe method or I'd do the volume and power buttons and usually that worked fine. Now, neither works. Thanks to wanting to try the pen in email, I've discovered tonight that my stylus is missing, must be on my desk at work and I'm about to go on vacation. Nice, hunh! I think a screaming phone if the S Pen gets more than six feet away should be the next S pen app!!!
