Verizon DroidX is $199 and $70/mo without the $10/mo "premium data" fee

The real news is:

"Also, any Verizon customer whose contracts ends anytime in 2010 is eligible for the upgrade pricing."

Why in the world did Sprint not do this with the Evo 4G? In this area, they should follow AT&T and Verizon.
Well, because Sprint already offers 12mo upgrades to Sprint Premier members. Which probably provides an early upgrade to a lot more people than just those whose contracts end in 2010.

I'm trying to decide between the Evo and the X now. I have ~2 weeks left on my 30 days for the evo, so I can take it back if I want, but damn, I can't decide. The only things that really lean me towards the X is the multi-media stuff (DNLA and that kick ass car and MM Stand), and the processor (it'll outrun the snapdragon I think?). But sprint is a lot cheaper for how I use the phone and the evo is still nice (fewer buttons which I like).

Gaaaah help >.<

5 GB cap on data and 2 GB cap on the hotspot.

you may want to check on that again. Data on the phone itself is theoretically "unlimited" and you won't get charged an overage if you go over 5GB. The only thing limited to 5GB are the mobile broadband plans and normal tethering add-on. You are correct that the $20 mobile hotspot app for the Droid X is limited to 2GB.

Yes and no.

What they will do is just cut you from your plan if you are excessively going over 5gb. The problem with these phones is they are being used to tether laptops and are being used for much more demanding network strains. ( from people like us who root our phones and play on the darkside)

In the telecommunications industry there is really no such thing as "unlimited" everyone has a threshold. Heres a view from someone who works for sprint:

You dont hear about it often, because it dosent happen alot. But Ive seen truckers get their plans taken away on Simply Everything because they racked up 5000 minutes in roaming, and ive seen people with tethered pre's get thier accounts cancelled because they were burning through 100 gigs of bandwith a month. They dont have to pay an ETF fee, basically Sprint says "Sorry but we can't service you anymore"

Its not just sprint, every carrier does that for that small percentage of people that overabuse the system

The 10.00 "evo" tax isn't just for 4g, it also frees the accounts from being flagged for abuse and removes the 5gb data cap for tethering. They expect people to be burning through 2-3x the amount of data of other smartphones and this is why its device specific right now.

Im happy paying another 10.00 a month..

In case you didnt notice.. AT&T got rid of unlimited plans, and their prices are atrocious now, Verizon hinted towards a tiered data structure, and it will be similar.

I guarantee you next year if you read this post "Sprint wont be so bad afterall"

But on Sprint can you do what VZW does with their 'friends and family' numbers.... and add the number that Google Voice uses to dial out to that list... and use Google Voice only... and get UNLIMITED calling to any number in the US?

This seems like the best place to ask this question...

I re-upped my contract (I'm a non-primary on a family plan) to the Droid Incredible back in the beginning of May, just when it was released - so I know I'm out of my 30-day "trial" period.

Let's say I want to upgrade to the DroidX when it's released in July - what kind of costs would I be looking at? Would I actually be breaking contract to upgrade to the new phone? Would I still get it at $199?

Or would it be a better overall price to wait until I can by one out of contract (off of ebay, or whatever) and then just activate my line to the new phone?

^ You have 3 options: 1) Pay the ~$330 ETF and then pay $199 for the Droid X on a new line; 2) Pay full retail which is currently unknown but likely to be $550 or so; or 3) Buy it from craigslist or ebay which could end up being more and you'd want to make sure it had a clean esn

They have the benefit of Any Mobile, Anytime though. Probably 95% of the people I call have cell phones so there wouldn't be a need for Friends and Family.

yeah, verizon reserves the right to terminate you if they deem you as having an adverse effect on there network but nowhere does it mention an actual amount of data required to do that. I guess they could just assume that you're tethering without the add-on if you have excessive usage also.

I'm apologizing in advance since I've asked this in three different areas, I just can't seem to find the answers. I'm hoping someone here can answer it.

I have the original Moto Droid, my contract ends in July 2011. I want the Droid X. I assumed that the only way that I could get it when it comes out is to pay full retail, which I'm fine with. By the time my contract is up I'm hoping for a front facing camera and 4G on my next phone.

Anyway, I went to Best Buy earlier today and talked to the guys there. I know they don't know that much about what to do but the Verizon store I go to was closed by the time I went. I just wanted to pre-order it but I want to pay full retail, then switch my number to the Droid X.

Is this possible? I went in all excited until my friend started saying **** about Verizon hitting me with an ETF, so it kinda made me worry and I've been thinking about it all night.

I pre-ordered it before I left the store, and the two guys said I'd be perfectly fine doing what I just explained.

I've never paid full retail for a phone, I've always done the NE2 deal, can someone explain a bit about paying full retail, and if I'll be ok?

Sorry for a crazy long post, just nervous about the ETF :o

Why did your friend even mention the ETF? That only kicks in when you cancel your account before the contract end. You can buy any phone that works on your network at anytime for full price, activate it and be happy. If your line is the primary line on a plan $50 or higher (not including data fees) it sounds as if you would be eligible for an annual upgrade (not discounted as much as the NE2) this July. But if you use the annual upgrade, be prepared to extend your contract until July 2012.

I wish VZW would indicate on My Verizon which date the annual upgrade is due on, not just the NE2 date. But you can assume that the annual upgrade date is 12 months before your contract expiration date. I would just like to see it in plain writing on my account.

I'm glad someone brought up that the extra $10/mo for the EVO removes the data caps on the phone. Seems like a good idea to me, maybe AT&T should learn from Sprint and do that for Iphone users. Make the people that use the most (theoretically) pay more. I know I use a lot of data so I'm ok paying the extra for the privelage of real unlimited data usage.
