Verizon Edge Program (Scam)

Is anyone else as upset about this like I am? I gave up my unlimited data plan to sign on for the original Edge Program.

For those of you who do not remember, you could edge up once you paid off 50% of your phone.

Apparently, Verizon's powers that be did not think this through. It wasn't profitable for them, and they changed the ability to Edge up to 60% then more recently 75% of the phone now has to be paid off before you upgrade.

This might as well be a 2-year agreement, with the capability to lease the phone. This program is a major bait and switch fail. I am livid as this is not what I originally signed up for.

Yeah they changed the terms on new edge agreements. I always thought that 50% was decent. At 75% it is not really worth unless you are trading in a crappy phone.

The thing that is nice about edge is on the more everything plan with the $25 discount edge it is a better deal then being on contract.

What plan are you on? If you did not convert your plan it is probably a really bad deal.

I am still holding on to my unlimited so edge is not one of my options.

Depending on the plan and phone it makes the phone free on edge with the $25 discount on the higher plans. I am spending $9 more for the note 4 but the droid turbo for example is $24.99 meaning your paying nothing for that phone with that $25 discount.

I do agree it's stupid they changed the terms though

Agreed. They should have grandfathered us in to 50% for those who originally signed up while those were the terms. I understand they don't legally have to since our next device will be on a new edge contract, but it is crappy of them to have done that. At least I got the cheaper $80 for 10gb while maintaining my $25 line discount, so that takes some of the sting out. $240/yr savings is nothing to sneeze at.

I don't like the new percent either but I don't think they changed what YOU signed up with.

When you signed your edge contract that percent was documented in writing. The change is for new edge contracts or a new phone on edge after your first one.

Were you told otherwise?

The point he is upset about, and I'm upset about too, is that when edge came out some of us expected to upgrade every 12 months only paying for half of the phone. Once the 12 months came around we were told we would have to pay more to upgrade the next phone

Edge certainly isn't a scam by any means. You pay $45 compared to $60 on single line plan. Plus you get to make 0% interest payments on your phone of choice. However I agree that the new 75% to edge is ridiculous. I could've lived with 60% but now its no longer a good choice for those who like to upgrade every 6-12 months. T-mobile still has 50% to jump, unfortunately their coverage is lacking compared to Verizon. Which is a shame!

I'm really considering the edge plan now that they have the discounts. I currently have two lines with UDP but we only avg 3gb a month combined since we're always in WiFi areas. For the same monthly price I pay now I can get 2 new phones with 10gb plan just to feel safe on not going over. Tough choice. My wife would get an iPhone 6 to replace her 4s, she's fine with having a phone for 2yrs + (going on 3yr with her phone), but even at 75% I can pay off her 6 and sell it for the pay off amount or more to upgrade her more frequently. I would prob get a nexus 6 which won't have the resale value of a iPhone 6. Hmmmm decisions decisions. Any suggestions appreciated

I would keep your unlimited. Just use a loophole to use your upgrades.

It isn't terrible lol. Only have to pay off around $170 more out of pocket and then the sales tax for the new phone if you keep the same upgrade cycle and I am using the Samsung Galaxy note 4 for this example . So if you want the note 5 and prices are the same I would be paying $170 + $62 for the device which is still cheaper then full retail. Not great but ok enough I guess if you require to have Verizon

Personally if you can save money I don't see why keep it if your not a data hog.

I agree with you if he was saving money. He said it would be the same price. If your not saving the money what would the incentive to give up unlimited be?

I meant same monthly price, maybe 10$ more, I'd be saving buying 2 new phones at retail price to keep unlimited so about $1500 if I understand the edge plan correctly?

Am I understanding this Edge plan correct? The $110 price I just got from VZW site for 2 smartphone, $40 - $25 for edge = $15ea line, so $30 for 2, plus $80 for 10GB = $110

Here's a link to how I understand it and how much I'd save by not having Unlimited Data since I'm not a data hog and combined avg 3Gb a month

Yes and no

Here I have the same plan but I am by myself with a phone on edge

10gb plan: $80
Phone: $15 with edge discount
Tablet access: $10
Note 4 phone payment: $29

You have to pay a monthly payment for s phone so it makes my plan $105 to $135 before adding taxes

Right I meant just the plan is $110 for both phones, on top of that the 24 payments for the phones, in your case 29$, for me about twice that for 2 phones so for simple math $110 + $60 = $170 before tax and fees. but after the 24 months it'll drop to $110 until I get new phones and start the 24 payments again? Seems better than the 2yr contract price, what's the catch?

Sorry, seems like I hijacked the post, I'm trying to find the Scam, besides the move from 50% to 75%. did the 50% people not get a discount on the plans?

It's not a "scam" like the title suggests but just making it worse . That's really the only difference now with it. Ring 75% full payments .

Yes your plan will be $110 after your done paying off the phones .

Monthly Breakdown of Two Smartphones on Edge with 10GB MORE Everything Plan

Edge payment for two Samsung Galaxy Note 4 smartphones

Your total while paying off the phones would be $168 per month before taxes, but once you have paid off the phones on the 24th month, you would need to enter another Edge agreement and get new phones, otherwise your line access will jump back up to $40 for each line, making your monthly bill $160. In other words, the $25 line access discount is only active when you are in an active Edge agreement.

Despite Verizon bumping up the upgrade period to 75%, it's still a better deal than buying a new smartphone phone under a 2 year contract. For example, the Motorola Droid Turbo just came out and is $24.99/month on Edge. With the $25 line access discount for folks with 10GB+ MORE Everything plans, people are getting them for free vs. $199 on a 2-year contract.

No you don't need to get new phones ...can call them and get the discount which has been proven in this thread

Here is the link showing what closingracer stated. The discount stays without a new Edge phone.
