Verizon Edge users

No it will. I told the rep that all I had was a working now 2 and an htc rezound and that I use the note 2as my main phone and the rep said to just to trade in the htc. So pretty much any smart phone I believe.

You mean if your new to edge right? If your an existing edge user you do have to give over the one you've been making payments on

I am on the Edge plan, and once you have paid half on you phone you can upgrade. Keep in mind though, you will have to start over on paying for new phone monthly, or wait till your current one is paid off, then get a credit on the trade in:)

I'm using Edge. It seemed the right option for me so that I could change out hardware sooner than 24 months. Sure, I might be paying a little more with the monthly and taxes up front, but I consider that my impatience tax for cell use. My wife, on the other hand, it not on Edge and does not have the need-to-upgrade disease.

The old edge plan required 50% to upgrade and that won't change for your current phone, but if you edge up again, you will have to pay 60% before upgrading, and it is over 20 months now (instead of 24 months before)

When did that change from 50% to 60%? Reason I'm asking is I got on the plan last December and I could swear that I was told it was 50%. Well, I just preordered my Note 4 and I was told it had to be 60%, so I had to pay 2 more payments. Not a huge deal to me, as it was about $58, but still frustrated me. That on top of how, when I started the original Edge plan, the guy at the store took my original Note 2 that was NOT PURCHASED at VZW and was NOT under contract. Overall, I LOVE Verizon, but these little things can really pi$$ me off!!

It was back in June. Before that, it was 50%. My understanding is that since you got it in December, that you would pay 50% of the existing phone to edge up but the n4 would have to reach 60%. I would have traded in a junk phone for the first edge up, certainly not a n2.

Well, from what I gather now, I shouldn't have had to turn in ANYTHING, since I wasn't already on Edge. It wasn't an Edge Up, but just joining Edge. I've asked here in a different thread and also talked with a different VZW store manager. I just wish I had realized it before nearly a year later, I would have gone back on that store.

I have a question/scenario that I'm looking for feedback on from edge members.

Can you still just switch your sim cards around to different phones without it effecting your edge enrollment?

Basically this is what I'm looking to do:
  • Upgrade my family plan from 4gb to 10gb w/ Edge to get the $25 allowance per smartphone line.
  • Get one of the $15/month edge phones (LG Lucid), netting a $10/month discount per line.
  • Use the sim card in my paid off LG G2 and keep the Lucid in the box (after initial activation).

If I did this for all of 5 of my current lines, all of which have newer paid off phones (G2s and S4s), I would have 2.5x the data and a $20 savings per month on my bill.
I usually end up flipping my phones on craigslist, and don't mind being about 6mo-1yr behind the latest tech.

Is this something that is possible, or do the Edge phones need to be always on, even after initial activation? I'd still be making the payments on the Lucids to be enrolled in Edge, would it matter what I do with my sim after that?

Thanks!

It sounds like you got hosed. Did they give you money for a trade in at least?

Beware of clueless Verizon employees. When I was talking to someone on the phone a month ago, she told me too it was 60% I told her NO, it's 50% since I was on the original Edge agreement. It's a huge benefit to know their policies better than them.

This is my understanding as well. In the end, it's still 12 months, but you end up paying 60% instead of 50%. Total money grab.

12 months to trade in yes, but before it was divided into 24 months, now 20 months.

No, he didn't give me anything for the trade in. According to him, it was a requirement of theEdge program. I didn't really do enough research prior to joining the program back then to know better. Since that's been nearly a year, I'll let it go, I guess, as it's really too late for them to do anything about it. But boy...wish that wasn't the case.

ok so if i wanted to upgrade to the note 4 which at this point i dont, ( im saying if i did want to) could i use my wifes old iphone4 as a trade in even though its on an account that was in her name only and she owes 300 dollars on the old bill but the acount has went to a collections agency?

Yes you can, once you pay off the amount owed and get verizon to remove the phone from the blacklist

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the Edge plan a lot more money for the same phones, especially if you keep the phone for two years? The thing I don't like is that you're paying for the full purchase price of the phone, and you're paying for the subsidy (rumored to be $20/month) that's built into the contract. Yes,you get a discount, but it's not the full amount of the subsidy unless you buy a huge amount of data.

Here's the math - contract price for an upgrade every two years vrs Edge with a $30/month Edge payment.

Contract at start = $200
Monthly = $0.
Subsidy discount = $0.
Total two year price =$200 (yes you're also paying the subsidy but for this example I'm subtracting $10/ month for the Edge plan to keep it equal).

Edge at start = $0.
Monthly = $30
Subsidy discount = -$10
Total two year price = $480 ($30 x 24 months, minus the $10 monthly discount).

That's $280 more for the same phone. Plus, you have to trade in your working phone with zero credit at the start (not at the end of the Edge term).

Yes, if you update yearly it's not nearly as bad ($140 with the example above) but it's still more money. I'm thinking about this plan as a way to trade in my Note 3 to buy another phone, but I'm not sure it's worth it to me (and I'm not telling anyone else what to do, just looking for any corrections to my math skills :D)
