Verizon Galaxy Nexus First Impressions/Reviews

Re: Galaxy Nexus- First Thoughts/ Opinions/Bugs

GPS locks quick and is very accurate.

Re: Galaxy Nexus- First Thoughts/ Opinions/Bugs

Only thing I don't like so far is that I have notifications (weather and battery) and they seem more dim than they should be. Screen brightness is at automatic and is bright enough for me.

did you go into the system volume settings. the max volume for notifications comes stock set at the highest volume "2 notches down" from the phones true max volume.

I use an app called Quick Profiles to manage ringer profiles and set everything up to 100%. I'll give the phone settings a closer look though.

Re: Galaxy Nexus- First Thoughts/ Opinions/Bugs

half the forum cant even complain about bugs.. they just spent the past month twitter/emailbombing verizon, placing a combined 15k phonecalls and about as much bad word of mouth as they could get out of their lips about how they wanted this phone, BUGS INCLUDED.

Re: Galaxy Nexus- First THoughts/ Opinions/Bugs

Autocorrect doesn't work in the browser. The bar above the keyboard just doesn't even show up.

Also, voice typing sucks! Sometimes it uses only address book names and number types. (Like mobile, home, work, etc.)

joseph justin seth <- I said "this is just a test." WTF?

Maybe you mumbled and that is why it said that?

Heh, someone else thinking the same thing. Most of these 'bugs' will probably be fixed anyways when the mythical 4.1 update comes along.

Haven't used it heavily yet, because had to go to work directly and couldn't unlock the bootloader (messing with work computer is strictly forbidden).

But among things I tried, camera, face unlock, hardware touch and feel etc etc, all surpass my expectation! Got my coworkers jealous :)

One funny read (hint: Fox News is apparently clueless in all fields):

I have a Bionic with the recent update applied, which I generally like. I spent some time looking at the Nexus today, thinking about burning an upgrade on it. Just some thoughts about the Nexus based on my short time with it.

The store had one Nexus on display, however it was not activated yet due to "demo activation problems". It was connected to wifi. The store had sold out of the Nexus earlier that morning.

I wasn't blown away by the Nexus screen. The screen is nice, the white color temperature is not bad even at low brightness levels like some AMOLED screens. However the Bionic screen is much brighter. Color saturation was subdued compared to other AMOLED screens I've seen.

The ICS buttons take room at the bottom of the screen so you don't always get the benefit of the full 4.65" screen size. I really missed the pre-ICS dedicated buttons, I found the on-screen ones confusing - always disappearing and re-appearing, or turning into little dots but you can't remember what each dot does. Probably I would get used to this.

The "Last App" button brings up a list of recent apps used, but you can only see about 4 or 5 apps at once without scrolling. I'm not sure that the way that Moto does it on the Bionic isn't better, where you can see up to 16 apps at once. It is nice to be able to swipe an app to unload it from memory on the Nexus.

Unfortunately there is no equivalent on the Nexus to Moto's "Battery Mode" setting which I use to customize when data is on and off. I save a lot of battery during the day with this because I have it set to turn off data 15 minutes after the screen turns off. I don't have to see every email as soon as it comes in though.

The camera was fast, and the pictures seemed decent to me.

Web browsing was a nice experience, and text on zoomed out web sites seemed a bit larger and clearer than the Bionic.

There were several guys crowded around looking at the Nexus so I didn't get to play as much as I'd like. But I left the store thinking that I didn't have to have one, at least for now.

The concerns about the thickness of this thing are highly exaggerated. This thing is super thin and light...while still feeling solid. Was worried it was going to be a brick compared to my Incredible 2, but my fears have been unfounded.

Fantastic ergonomics...tho the power button the side is cumbersome sometimes because you hit the volume button on the other side sometimes when you unlock the phone. This will be alleviated with use I'm sure.

I got to play with one today for 20 min, the stupid thing had a case on it and bolted to the sensor, all the phones had cases on them making it impossible to feel the phones thinness or texture..finally made them remove it off the case and alarm for me..my first impressions so far arent really good..battery cover is FLIMSY, phone feels cheap to me, Speakerphone sounds Tinny, camera snaps fast but quality not great, device is WAY to big for me..one handed operation and using this as a daily device would get old real fast..i was however impressed with the screen res..and like the curviness of the screen..

Aesthetics: This thing is beautiful. No doubt about it. (And I have no qualms about the Verizon 4GLTE logo on the back - this thing is fast).
Screen: Honestly looks and works like a bigger OG Droid screen (as far as clarity goes). I do have the anti-glare screen protector over it, so it gets the rainbow effect most places, but it's still nice!
Hardware: Feels real nice. Fits right into my hand.
Overall User Interface: ICS definitely does give Android a soul
Signal quality (Compared to other devices): Haven't had any issues.
GPS: Haven't tested.
Social Networking: Works well (except for Facebook contact syncing of course)
Battery Life: Battery was at about 50% when I got it, was down to ~20% three hours later (with extensive 4G usage). I'm letting it fully charge for a few hours before I judge battery life
Performance: so much nicer than the OG Droid
Media (music, movies, DLNA): Streaming Google Music (over wifi) worked great. I can't complain about the speaker
Keyboard: the default ICS keyboard is good. I almost don't want to go back to swype now that I have this huge screen to type on
Camera (both still & video): Pictures could be better, but I won't complain
How the Galaxy Nexus compares to your previous smartphone (if applicable): The OG Droid was really stuttering running CM7.1 - upgrading to the Galaxy Nexus was night-and-day improvement
Disappointments (if any): I wish the notification LED pulsed more often - common complaint. Vibrator seems kind of weak, but maybe that's because the phone is light and plastic as opposed to the industrial build on the OG

Re: Galaxy Nexus- First THoughts/ Opinions/Bugs

The Rezound shows 3-4 signal bars vs. 0-1 on the GN. Is the Nexus really less sensitive or just a display issue?

I live in a weak non 4G signal area, my wifes Droid Razr shows 2-3 bars and my GN sitting right next to has been on 0-1 bars since I got it. However I have made 3 calls totally around 20 minutes and haven't had any static or dropped calls. I believe the GN isn't displaying signal indicator correctly.

The true test of signal strength will be when I return to work next week, we have some areas that are really hard on cell phone signal.

Pretty sure the Moto phones will always get better reception. They just have better antennas it seems. It's always been that way. Sammy and HTC have always lagged behind a bit.

I am coming from a DX. These are my first impressions.

Pros
ICS is very slick.
No preceptible delay.
Performance is snappy and smooth.
Display is simply gorgeous.
Phone is slick and thin and light.
No problem connecting the phone to my laptop via USB.

My negatives so far:
Give me the option to have more than 5 home screens.
Put the menu button in the same place in every application.
Give the menu button some more space. Make it bigger.
Speaker volume is weak. When I have the system volume cranked, it ought to wake the dead.
Notification sounds seem to be experiencing some lag.
Need a 4G / 3G toggle widget.
Phone is slick and thin. Gonna need a skin to keep hold of it.
Power button should have been placed on top.

What I havent been able to test
Battery Life
Camera Quality
GPS

Mind you none of this is making me regret this phone. I will have to play with it some more, but I think it's a keeper. Most of what I consider to be cons can probably be takencare of via an update. I will maintain an open mind. This is a phone, not a concubine afterall.

What have I done to the phone? Much of nothing. Put the extended battery into place. No launcher. I want to give the native launcher a bit. I have put beautiful widgets and Android Pro Widgets into place. Other than the lack of more than 5 home screens and sliding home bar at the bottom, I may not put a launcher on here.

Played around with one this morning.
I was not able to zoom in on some sites. I wasn't able to zoom in and see larger text for ESPN.com mobile site. I'm able to zoom in just fine on my current Android phone.

I have always Felt that way also, I just have never seen one show 0 bars as consistently as my GN has this morning and still be able to place calls without any trouble. I am actually having more issues placing calls with my AT&T device when it has 5 bars. :D

does anyone think the phone is hot? When im on a phone call I can feel the warmth of the phone on my whole face
