Verizon Galaxy S3: 4.3 update questions and issues!

Re: Galaxy S3 4.3 update questions and issues!

that is why I am afraid to do a factory reset because that may not solve my battery issues and I will loose all of my data. hope Verizon fixes 4.3 on the s3 soon

Re: Galaxy S3 4.3 update questions and issues!

I would advise you to ignore their advice about waiting for 4.4 and about not performing a Factory Reset.

First and easiest thing to try is to reboot into Recovery mode and clear the system cache.

Thanks so much for your quick feedback GSDer! How do I reboot into Recovery Mode? Also, will doing this delete all my information? I backed everything up to my SD card last night using MyBackUp Pro, but I still want to make sure.

Re: Galaxy S3 4.3 update questions and issues!

How do I reboot into Recovery Mode?
Here's a canned summary that explains Recovery mode (and Download mode, in case you encounter the term):
- you use Recovery mode to clear the system cache and to Factory Reset
- you use Download (aka Odin) mode (showing the Android guy) to load/reload firmware
- the key sequences to enter both modes are very similar, and they are timing dependent so it may take a few tries to get it working
-- Recovery = Volume Up + Home + Power
-- Download = Volume Down + Home + Power
- for either, you start with the phone completely off
- press and hold the required keys simultaneously, and release them all when you see the swirling logo (not the static white text)

Try Recovery mode first (use the Volume rockers to navigate; use the Power button to select) and if it boots into this mode just clear the cache and then restart.
Also, will doing this delete all my information?
Clearing the system cache won't touch your data.

You are right to be cautious. I will mention that I've had a problem with MyBackUp Pro with its restore of MMS - basically, although the MMS got restored correctly, I had subsequent problems with the stock Messaging app if I deleted one of the MMS threads. I sent them logs and sample data and they were never able to fix the issue. YMMV.

That's why I recommend using Kies, at least for SMS/MMS - I've never had a problem with the restores I've done. YMMV.

Anyone afraid of doing a Factory Reset is ripe to lose all of their data when their phone gets lost, stolen, damaged or corrupted. Your insurance against losing data is to make frequent backups to your SD card, your computer and the cloud (never trust just the SD card - that has a history of getting corrupted on the S3).

Here are some steps you can take to be ready:
Samsung Kies: v3 allows you to backup your contacts, SMS/MMS, pictures/videos (if stored on the internal memory), call logs, (some) TouchWiz settings and apps (I'm not sure about app data)

Cloud Drive: http://market.android.com/details?id=com.amazon.clouddrive.photos - allows you to automatically backup your pictures/videos to the cloud (regardless of whether you save them on the internal memory or SD card; 5GB free)

Helium: http://market.android.com/details?id=com.koushikdutta.backup - allows you to backup (most) apps AND app data to an SD card or Google Drive (or other cloud solutions; free, but cloud use requires the paid version)

Of course you can use Dropbox or other cloud solutions to automatically backup your pictures/videos.

Between the various solutions mentioned it should take you no more than an hour or two to restore your phone (or replacement device) to a usable state. If you throw in a 3rd party launcher you can even restore your Home screen layout.

Re: Galaxy S3 4.3 update questions and issues!

Ok, I have a bit of a different situation after reading through all of this thread. I am an Old School Refurbisher in the biz 21 years. I'm more of a hardware guy than a software guy, but have have some experience in flashing. The S3's on VZW are a pretty good seller in my small shop. One of the best things I offer my customers is the ability to know how many hours were used on the phone before; kinda like knowing the miles on a used car's odometer. There are various ways to find this out depending on the make and model of the phone. On the S3 I was able to power on the phone, go to dialer, press *#83786633 then press home button, then go back to dialer, delete the last sequence, then enter *#22745927, and a SPC password box would come up, enter the 6 zeros for VZW, then enable or diabled hidden menu, would come up and press enable. then go back to dialer and enter the old Sprint code ##786# and Lifetime Call Timer would come up. I could then give an accurate, and honest, account of how much the board was used.

With the new 4.3, this doesnt work. It wont go past the second code string. So I read on here you have to root the phone. I followed all the instructions and supposedly rooted the phone, and still nothing. I notice some others on here are trying to enable hidden menus for various other reasons, anyone figure this out yet?

Your experience is different than mine; I've never gotten any special codes to work on my Verizon phone, even back when I had 4.1.2, 4.0.4 or Gingerbread.

Admittedly I wasn't aware of the code that you just provided, so perhaps that would work on earlier firmware - I'll have to give it a try the next time I revert to 4.1.2 (I never accepted the OTA and am running a modified version of 4.3).

You might try over on XDA to see if they can shed some light on the dilemma.

Re: Galaxy S3 4.3 update questions and issues!

Try changing the page to desktop view

Was that suggestion for me 'Beach? Please explain, I dont understand.

I would be interested in knowing if this works for those of you who went back to the 4.1.2. If I do this, will it interfere with the VZW OTA when I sell them? Will this root I already did interfere with it on the 4.3? I remembered after the fact, I could not activate an HTC EVO on Sprint after the last user rooted the phone; I hope this is not the case. Please let me know ASAP. Thanx!!!

Re: Galaxy S3 4.3 update questions and issues!

When i got the latest update my contacts stopped working. now i cannot make any calls or see who called if i missed the call.

Re: Galaxy S3 4.3 update questions and issues!

i want Verizon or Samsung to the s3 4.3 problems like battery and apps crashing. if it is too hard to fix then offer us a new phone. the problems should have been fixed by now. it will not get fix until the s5 has 5.0 on it and who knows when that will be.

Have you cleared the system cache in Recovery mode?
Did you perform a Factory Reset?
Did you try reloading the firmware from scratch?

If you haven't tried each of those things, one at a time, in that order, then you should.

Re: Galaxy S3 4.3 update questions and issues!

I have this problem for a month now (after it updated to 4.3) on my Galaxy S3... Some of my contacts from the Device list just disappear. If I'm lucky I can find them in the SIM or in my Google account (thank god I finally decide to sync after the 3rd time it happend, not a fan of syncing thou) and bring them back to the device list. So i suggest it happens when I connect my phone to PC (I charge it this way, cause it's easier) Since 4.3 there's no Kies app on the phone, just Kies 3 for the PC which I DONT use, just connect it like a flash memory. So what can I do, besides full reset?

SOLVED>>>>
Well, I figured it out. It's not the anroid, it's Viber. I didn't realize it till yesterday. In Viber I see my contacts double. Some of them are even triple. So when I open Viber I always delete the duplicate contacts - manually. Then after a while I get the missing contacts from the phone. After that I get them back to the phone, I again open Viber and see the duplicate contacts and I again delete them cause it's annoying! I told my friends with android phones and they tried the same - the result was also the same... So don't delete the duplicate numbers from Viber, cause it'll delete them from your phone!

You can start by not double-posting - you already have a thread open for this purpose.

Re: Galaxy S3 4.3 update questions and issues!

Hi, there might have been some posts about the following but i cannot find the answers:
After my software was updated to 4.3 i have the following issues:
-when i reboot i get a error saying "unfortunetly setup wizard has stopped"
-My S Memo that was part of the origional apps whem i got my phone is now not working and i have rather important info on there
-I have moved some of my apps to my SD card now they are not available to use - they are greyd out and i cannot find a way to move them back to my phone i realy do not want to re-download all the apps. If the functionality is available why is it not useable?
-my phone is slower allthough i have enough memory or should i say the same memory available as before
- i also have all these tasks (mostly from playstore) that keeps on running even if i force stop them and i have restricted the back ground usage
I hope someone can help :)

The best solution to your problems is to reboot into Recovery mode and wipe the system cache and then to perform a Factory Reset.

Since the Factory Reset will wipe out all of your data (except what you have stored on an SD card) you'll want to make a backup before proceeding. Install Kies v3 on your computer and use it to backup your contacts, pictures/videos, SMS/MMS, TouchWiz settings, etc.

You can also rely on:
Cloud Drive: http://market.android.com/details?id=com.amazon.clouddrive.photos (automatically backup your pictures/videos to the cloud; 5GB free)

Helium: http://market.android.com/details?id=com.koushikdutta.backup (backup your apps and app data)

Not sure why the apps that have been moved to the SD card are non-functional, but to move them back go to Settings -> More (if using the Tab view) -> Application manager -> scroll right to the SD CARD Tab -> scroll down to any item with a checkmark (that means it's been moved) and uncheck it. This will open the item at which point you can select the 'Move to device storage' button

Re: Galaxy S3 4.3 update questions and issues!

My S3 will auto reboot every time I access the clipboard. If I access the clipboard through the stock keyboard by tapping and holding microphone/setting button then tapping on clipboard the phone will freeze and autoreboot. If I go to a blank text field of any program press and hold to bring up the paste and clipboard buttons and I select clipboard the clipboard will appear. If I am lucky I can select something to paste. However it will freeze and my phone autoreboots.

I have cleared partition cache and still issue. I plan on clearing partition cache again and factory reset when I have time tomorrow.

In the meantime, please access the clipboard by the above 2 methods and see if your phone does the same. Report back if you have issues. Curious on if this is widespread or just me.

Can anyone tell me why/how one app would wipe itself clean? My S-Memo app is suddenly empty. I use it often and had several very important notes in there. Now I open it and only the 8 stock ones are there. I really hope I can get my memos back!!

that should be the least of your worries. I have major issues like app crashing and battery drain

Welcome to the forums!

Did S Memo crash (force close)? That could have caused something like you describe.

I don't use S Memo but it's possible that your data is still stored somewhere in the internal memory; you could try using a file manager (ex. My Files, which is built-in) to see if you can find the directory where S Memo saves its files.

I'd suggest Keep http://market.android.com/details?id=com.google.android.keep which syncs your data to the cloud - after I Factory Reset my phone and install Keep all of my notes are right there.
