Verizon Galaxy S4: Screen Suddenly Locked

Previously I was using a pattern to unlock my phone. Suddenly the front screen contained a different unlock method indicating that I had 10 attempts to enter a numeric code or the entire phone would erase.
Is this a virus?
What can I do?

Welcome to Android Central! Has the phone been in your possession the whole time? Could someone else have done this?

You might want to bring it to Verizon and see if they can help.
