Verizon holding up our update

Anyone that still believes with a new Nexus device that 'updates will be quick and direct from Google'....well, I've got a bridge I can sell them.

That's the last time I get suckered in to that line. I hope this provides an education to the many that were ranking on people like me that said PRIOR to the Nexus release "how do we know updates will be fast?"

What nonsense!

Damn right.

All those other Verizon LTE phones running Ice Cream Sandwich sure as hell got their update quicker.

THIS.

This is nothing new and it wasn't "reported" here because its nothing new and this site doesn't throw up non-news stories under panic-inducing headlines to drum up site traffic like some other sites do :)

EDIT: Here's a relevant point I made in the last (of many) ZOMG WHEREZ OUR UPDATE thread, lol: http://forums.androidcentral.com/ve...rticle-i-thought-interesting.html#post1725278

I specifically stated that it was something we all knew already. This also is not another ZOMG WHEREZ OUR UPDATE thread. I was pointing out an interesting statement made by a well known Google Engineer about how ridiculous it was that operator interference is hindering Google flagship device updates

Sorry if it sounded like I was attacking or making fun of you personally, not my intention. Just responding to the nature of the thread, the comments, and the reasoning of why this type of nonsense becomes a headline on a web tabloid like droid-life and not a legitimate news site like Android Central.

But I will say that, regardless of the quoted words or implication, its a stretch to say that "operator interference is hindering" anything here... this is a carrier performing the testing it requires to be performed on all OTA updates, a result of a combination of its own success-promoting polices and of federal regulations. Like I said in the comment I linked to: Verizon is NOT sitting on this update and holding it back from you guys for ANY other reason than it is not done testing it. That's the way it is. That's the price you pay for getting to run a nexus on verizon's network which, as much as people like to complain, is far superior in every way to the others.

No sweat. I just wanted to make it clear what my intentions were. I also realize that the DL article is a little harsh and thats why I linked to the G+ post from the original source. Maybe I should edit the OP to make this more clear. Btw I love Android Central and in no way meant to bash or imply they should write a scathing article on the subject. AC is my goto site for all Android news.

I absolutely believe that Verizon has an obligation to ensure the update works with their equipment and network.

HOWEVER, I also absolutely believe that it is irresponsible for the combination of Google, Samsung, and Verizon to let a phone with the known issues of the Gnex go over 4.5 months without fixes. I don't care to point fingers, I don't care if you can fix with root, etc. The companies involved should have dedicated enough resources to solve this quickly. That would have been responsible. The delay just proves that this industry has released so many defective products that it and we no longer believe they should wait until a product is ready.

Wait a minute...on this discussion. Verizon had no problem putting out the GNEX w/ICS w/all the bugs it has now, right? So if they already have a new release that "fixes" or helps some of the major issues, eg the radios, why are they taking their sweet time? No release will be perfect, so if you have one that's incrementally better, help the customers...

I'm wondering if the GNEX is already an orphan...and they've moved on .

Remember it's not late unless they promise a release date and go past it!

" He said that the part of this all that “blows” his mind, is the fact that “some variants of the Google-engineered flagship devices” (read: Nexus devices) still have not received ICS or are stuck on older versions “because of delays introduced by operator approvals.”

I think I can chime in on behalf of most HTC Rezound owners, we're also tired of waiting for ICS updates (considering very well functioning leaks have been out for a while now). For those of us also following VZW's marketing they seemed to unload the Rezound ASAP, even dropping the price to $50 despite being one of the higher end phones at the end of last year in terms of hardware.

Damn right.

All those other Verizon LTE phones running Ice Cream Sandwich sure as hell got their update quicker.

It's always the waiting game isn't it? An anonymous individual posted a screen of the VZW Android device update schedule which suggested the Rezound would finally see an ICS update within the coming month or so, so we'll see.

Have'nt seen this on here yet. Basically what everyone already knew but there it is. Pretty ridiculous. Even Google doesnt seem happy with the current update situation. Go figure....

Edit- Want to clarify that the intention of this thread is mainly to discuss the statement by Jean-Baptiste. Thats why Ive linked directly to his post. The DL link is mostly for reference and another perspective on the situatuon.

Good link, the comments from JBQ confirm something I've suspected for awhile. For anyone who didn't read through the comments, I found this link to be an EXTREMELY informative look at what the hardware makers have to go through to get an update approved.

Not to "defend" Verizon, or anything, but I can't imagine they purposely hold back updates, or anything like that. I don't deny that it's frustrating how long it can take for updates to release, but I doubt any of us really know what, exactly, is going on at Verizon that is causing them to be held up. It could be any number of things. But it doesn't mean Verizon is sitting on updates, trying to annoy their customers, or worse, trying to push their customers to other phones.

I figure they need another month to make sure it's truly ready. I mean come on folks it's Verizon we are talking about.

They have to go over it with a fine tooth comb TWICE to make sure the update isn't giving us or letting us do something for free that they could charge us a nickel or dime to use.

I went over vzw's control and updated manually :)

I'm not buying this. as I pointed out in a Xoom thread, Verizon isn't the common dividing line between ICS updates and the unupdated. Its very possible that everything from the GN launch forward demonstrates the Google is having a hard time making nice with LTE

Google doesn't make anything work with LTE. That's all carrier and manufacturer.

I'm sure Google is available to assist, but the responsibility to get CMDA/LTE working is all Verizon and Samsung. Google creates an OS that works on the unlocked/world version. Samsung and Verizon patch it and change things to get it to work on the LTE version, thus creating a different version number.

tl;dr -- Google only cares about the open source portions.

I'll write more about this in my column this week. But the short version is this: Verizon has ALWAYS been ... shall we say ... thorough in its network testing. This is not new, and it'd be awesome if blogs weren't so quick to slap bad headlines on things.

The way I look at it is this... VZW has to deal with the angry customers if something goes wrong with the update. I can't blame them for wanting to do thorough tests.

Well with that said the leak came in early February with new radios and all that. I have called Verizon for different reasons and since January they have been reading from a change log about some update that was coming. They would tell me that the update is coming in feb, then it changed to march, now its may. The point is why does every other lte phone have no problems with updates? I mean the razor is about to get ics. I expect it to be a newer build than what we have. There is no excuse for it to take this long. Verizon is slow already, I know if I hear samsung is involved also then its over. We might get the update in November or maybe next year.

Anyone who says to root and update yourself is not the answer. These manufactures should be required to fix bugs within a normal time frame.

Everyone says to root, but that is not what Verizon says. Verizon says if you root we will void your warranty. So unless Verzion puts out a memo that says we are okay with everyone rooting their GN to fix problems that we cannot they need to be held accountable for releasing fixes!

The problem is these companies have so much money rolling in they couldn't care less about the few people with problems. It is all about the big picture.

So if you go into a Verizon store with a rooted phone they will still fix it replace it?

Your warranty becomes voidable, meaning it is at their election to void your warranty. It is not automatically voided.

And I've done the above without any problems. It's not like your phone has a massive flag that says "rooted," particularly when the issue is hardware related. I don't recommend being so cavalier or risky, but alas.
