Question Verizon is switching from message+ to google messages. . .notification sound help!

Today I got a message in the message+ app that verizon is shutting it down and made it easy to switch to google messages so I did. I have a custom ringtone for message notification, one I made myself and have been using on message+. But I can't find a way to change the notification sound on google messages! The little meteor ding doesn't catch my attention at all but I can't find any way to switch it to anything else, let alone my custom sound. I've already missed messages. I checked settings in the app and from the settings menu. I don't see any option that allows the notification for google messages to be changed . .. just allow or silent. I have the option of another message app that came installed on the phone. I've tried it and wasn't impressed.
I may as well ask now . . . does google messages allow any customization? Regardless, the sound notification will be the reason I keep or abandon google messages. Please tell me if it is possible to change the sound notification on google messages and if so, how to access changing the notification sound .

so i want to bump this and last night i went into verzion chat and they claim that because i got an older phone that i should used textra if i install google message then i was going to have some issues am not sure what to do

i already said not now yesterday when it gave me new message saying upgrade to google message to enhance chats with custom themes<-we know its a lie and screen effects not now upgrade screen effects? what the heck is that

I forgot to answer you about screen effects.

so nobody else going to chim in? i think sat i might focus and have time figure out what to as much as it pains me to say goodbye to samsung message or 1 day next week

stupid samsung making me go into google message on my s20 plus why can't they just leave it alone meh

i know i don't used verizon message plus but somebody in verizon community posted this on google message making me worry

Try this:

Go into settings, notifications, advanced settings, then check if manage notification categories for each app is toggled on. If not, switch it on, then go back & check if the notification categories option is now showing in the Google Messages app.

hey i just went into google message and i can't find this is this only folks on android 14 or will i be able to see this android 13 i'm confused

also is it a know issue that despite i have automatically previews show all previews i'm not seeing pics in links if i switch back to samsung message app its there

really am not a fan of being forced into this don't think i want this btw surely somebody will help me out meh

Did you enable notifications categories in settings&gt;notifications&gt;advanced?

that's the thing i go into advance and i don't even see it what am i doing wrong? all i see group message auto download mms auto download when roaming use simple characters get sms deliver report show iphone reaction wireless emergency alerts sim card phone number

so what is going on do i need to turn off rcs and then find it turn back on already install and uninstall twice already this morning do i need to clear data cache?

i have sent 2 notifications to my brother this morning and youngest niece since got rcs and haven't heard from them am not sure they getting it will this appear once somebody send me a text or what?

Your not paying attention
You're going first to the message app settings

Go to your settings menu on the phone then next scroll to notifications then tap and scroll to advanced settings, is manage notifications categories for each app toggle on?

So you toggled on manage notifications categories in apps

Next step long press the message app then tap info>tap notifications show a screenshot what's there notifications types all 3 should be highlighted?
Then go to bottom notifications categories tap >tap the words incoming messages and it will bring up another menu

Your all set on incoming messages set to alert you can change the tone there if u like

i'm talking on app on my phone do you have notification categories configure in messages also so you understand what i'm saying in google message app go into advance and tell me if you see anything like converstation floating bubbles show app icon in notifcations etc etc etc

perhaps it will show up when somebody notify me or reason why don't see these in advance inside google message due to being on android 13 and it only works on android 14 i don't know however if nobody texting me back then there's a problem
