Verizon looking into the signal strength issue, software coming

Re: Verizon looking into the signal strength issue, software comi

Here's a little tid bit I found clicking around the android open source site. Android 4.02 uses radio software versions I515.EK05 and EK02 (you can see this in the settings of your phone). Android 4.03 (which was announced as 'coming soon' to Galaxy Nexus) can use those versions, but is expecting version 1515.EK06 and EK04 (seemingly an upgrade to both radios).

Note that the GSM Galaxy Nexus has no radio change from 4.02 to 4.03 (its not like radios have to be updated each time). Also, note that the Nexus S is getting a radio update this far out from its launch (they keep making these better over time).

Its all at the bottom of the page. More evidence of progress on a new radio software update. HOPE!

Wow, good first post. This looks very promising.

Have yet to have any issues with my 4G when I get to work. Have full bars with a -58 dbm and was pulling 21+ down 15+ up on speedtest app

Long time listener, first time caller. :-!

I want this phone so badly, but need to be able to make calls in less than perfect reception situations. This is the only thing holding me back.

I honestly don't think you'll have any issue in that regard. As I said in a previous post, I have absolutely no issues whatsoever with actual calls. In terms of LTE, being from Central Ohio and living in St. Louis, and having traveled through other LTE areas, Columbus and St. Louis have the most robust networks anywhere so you really won't have LTE issues when you're out and about.

I just have an issue with keeping 4G at my home because I'm in a valley. I really don't think you'll have that issue though. Central Ohio is pretty flat.

as far as the camera.. its not horrible.. and I do appreciate the quick shutter speed, especially considering how slow the fascinate was.. but I would probably value a larger MP and the ability to focus manually over the instant shutter/blurry pics. I went to a party this weekend and got a bunch of pics of my friends having fun.. and unfortunately theres alot of blur in the pics.. it would of taken me a few extra seconds to snap these pics with my old fascinate.. but they would of been clearer..

Touch the screen where you want it to focus before you hammer away on the shutter button....

Re: Verizon looking into the signal strength issue, software comi

My 4G is 0-2 bars with a full signal every now and then. So should it be easier for VZ/Google to issue a fix since this is a stock phone. This is where having a nexus shines right? Like Apple, the fixes should come quickly unlike HTC and Moto where it takes months? I hope. Or else im gonna have to call VZ.

I'm in PHX and that is identical to my experience.

Re: Verizon looking into the signal strength issue, software comi

Hope it gets better my signal is hit or miss dbm always 100 or more i went to verizon store to compare signals with other lte phones they were all in the 70s mine was just over 100

Re: Verizon looking into the signal strength issue, software comi

I figured this would come up eventually.

This is not a necessarily accurate conclusion. If it's a network issue, how could Google possibly have the ability to develop/fix the code for VERIZON'S network? If this is a hardware/network-software issue, then it has to come from Verizon. That does NOT mean it's not a true Nexus with quick update turnaround. I mean, didn't having the 4.0.2 update on Day 1 of launch before the GSM versions already debunk this line of thinking?

Brandon

But we don't know if it's simply software on the part of the Nexus that VZW had nothing to do with. If it's hardware than lots of people are going to be very unhappy. But I can't see why it would be Verizon's network when different 4G phones at the same spot and at the same time are doing much better in terms of grabbing the signal.

To me that sounds like a software, hardware or software/hardware issue...not a VZW issue.

Re: Verizon looking into the signal strength issue, software comi

Erm. This is what 4.1 (which testers have already received) is for.

People get so up in arms about everything. I am sure verizon's testers caught this and they are working on a fix. Not like they are sitting around twirling their thumbs lol.

Except for maybe the double jointed VZW employees.

I sincerely hope it's a software issue... but what if it's a hardware issue? [

When Apple had its antenna-gate fiasco, they solved it by issuing free cases(or was it bumpers?)

I can't imagine having to one of those on the beautiful Galaxy Nexus... I plan to use it naked. (not me... the phone!)

Ugh, this has been addressed what seems like a million times (mostly by me it seems). Every radio is tweakable with software, it's just a matter of how tweakable. Now you're not going to turn a Samsung radio into a Motorola radio with software, but it's not like it can't be fixed at all.

I hope it's not down by tweaking the software to increase the radio output... (which sounds like
slightly decreased battery life to me)

Re: Verizon looking into the signal strength issue, software comi

My Nexus is showing the same number of bars that my Bionic did when i had it, about 2. At least the Nexus isn't bouncing between 3G and 4G and sucking the battery dead like the Bionic. With the RAZR getting an update to allegedly improve 3G/4G connectivity, it seems all LTE phones have issues with connectivity out of the gate.

Re: Verizon looking into the signal strength issue, software comi

Ever since that 4G outage my LTE has been crap. When I talked to Verizon today I told the rep that. My phone and mifi are bouncing. She said they are still cleaning up after the outage. Oh well....

Re: Verizon looking into the signal strength issue, software comi

I haven't had any dropped calls but I will say that my work iPhone 4 has full bars in my house and my Nexus barely has 1 to 2 bars in the house. So that's kind of scary. I still have data coverage but use WiFi in the house anyway.

Interesting. I seem to have full bars all day everyday.

I applaud Verizon. It took Sprint at least a month to acknowledge the issue on the Nexus S 4G and there were the same vocal complaints when that phone was released.
