Verizon looking into the signal strength issue, software coming

Re: Verizon looking into the signal strength issue, software comi

By the way, I did some informal tests today when I was running around doing some errands.

At my home, the Nexus sticks to one bar, and 7 down and 1-3 up on the main floor. On the second floor it can fluctuate from 7-15 down to 3-6 up. The most bars I've ever seen in my house has been 3, on the second floor. Ping is insanely low, almost always at 40ms or less.

For the second part, I tested in the parking lot/inside of a local Target about two miles away. This is in a newer expanded area of the network, and its got more towers. I averaged 10 down and 7 up here, including inside. (where I had zero bars) Bars continued to hold around two, sometimes jumping to 3. This area maxed out at 25 down and 12 up, more than double the speed of at home.

So here's my theory:

For whatever reason, the Nexus has trouble grabbing and holding onto a signal in more loaded areas that have fewer towers. This makes sense, but is still curious considering that a Rezound I had would never drop to 3G and almost always got more than 10 down at home. Coupled with issues handing off to 3G, and handing off too quickly to 3G, it makes the Nexus seem less than stellar compared to its HTC and motorola counterparts.

I have also noticed that the Nexus has a signal attenuation issue, depending on where you hold it. I have been able to get my speeds to stop completely and freeze during a speedtest just by holding it closer to the top (which is a natural position for someone with a little bit smaller hands like me). I've also found that just placing my hand there will force the phone to drop to 3G, and then to no signal at all. This, I think, is much more serious than any of the other issues I've encountered, because I can kill the radio just by putting my hand in the wrong place.

You're holding it wrong! ;)

I like this quote from your link: "I have two GNex's and sitting next to each other the signal went from 103db to 83 on the new radio, that is huge!"

Where? I can't find that. I want to see some feedback from them about the new radios. :P

Ha. I'm not complaining about it, really, just more of an observation. Plus, sometimes I HAVE to hold it that way thanks to my stubby little fingers.

I too have had signal strength issues. Sitting next to a Bionic I almost always show -20 higher (number higher, strength lower). Never have dropped a call though.. I disabled 4g today and sync on email. Battery is at 60% after 13 hours. Moderate use today..

Re: Verizon looking into the signal strength issue, software comi

Hello all, Have had the Galaxy Nexus(Verizon) for 5 days. Los Angeles and Riverside areas...Media Signal strength has been terrible, constantly droppng service. Never, has there been a consistent 4 bars (4G) very spotty in the LA and Riverside areas. Will VZ be able to correct the Issues? Also with the Speed? I have been testing on CNET, Bandwidth Speed in 3G range from 200 to 400Kbps? 4G ranges from 1800 to 2200. The Droid X in 3G range is 3000 to 4500, What does this mean? Is this issue being addressed. Also the sound from the external speaker? Not loud enough to hear alot of ring tones? Call signal strength appears to be ok tho...No droped calls as of yet. Does anyone have any answers to my questions? Thank you

Re: Verizon looking into the signal strength issue, software comi

Can the radio issue be fixed by an OS update or is it a firmware update that has to come from Samsung?

Re: Verizon looking into the signal strength issue, software comi

Relax people. They know about whatever issues exist, and the fixes already are in the pipeline. Be patient.

What if the fix requires a firmware update? That comes from Samsung, not Google, right?

More importantly, is it a hardware issue that software can't save? :(

Re: Verizon looking into the signal strength issue, software comi

And then all the whiners can quit posting multiple threads complaining lol.

I'll never understand why some guys insist on calling people with real issues, really poor signals, phones that can't hold on to a 4G signal where others can, 'whiners'. Many of these people, myself included, have categorically stated they love the phone but this problem is real. So why belittle the problem that is upsetting so many of us?

Oh well, such is life.

Careful now, you'll be labeled a 'whiner'. Keep your problems to yourself. ;)

a whiner or god forbid a TROLL .

Can you imagine a phone like the Nexus with a radio like that in the Rezound? WOW!!!! I too had the Rezound and the reception was leaps & bounds better than the Nexus, but the overall experience is just more fun on the Nexus. We can only hope that a software upgrade can salvage this problem, but I'd be lying if I didn't say I have my doubts. They never solved the issue on my Charge. Both my Rezound & Bionic had clearly better 4G reception with the Rezound being the best.

I too am concerned. I can't deal with my phone getting barely any quality signal in my house. I'm probably going to flash the leaked radios and see if they help. If they don't, the nexus may be going back.
