Verizon Pixel Oreo update.

This. Did the same and cleaned up some of the "edges" .. Really helped smooth out the battery drain

Strangely enough, I just noticed that, after the hard reset, the "Change Icon Shape" option is gone. Now that's bizarre!

I use Google Drive for cloud back-up storage and it backs up pretty much everything including text messages and call log. The entire process took a bit over an hour for me, but most of that time was spent downloading the hundred or so apps I have on my Pixel. But my apps were set up exactly as they were beforehand. Obviously, I did have to sign back into my apps, but they were just like I left them.
Thanks! Little nervous about the built in backup.. I don't see all my apps listed. Might supplement with a backup app.

Yep - this. Minor updates (7.1 to 7.1.2) I don't. Whole versions - 6 to 7, 7 to 8, a factory reset is always recommended. When I first updated my battery life was total crap. Once I reset it, it was back to it's full glory.

So when you do a factory reset you lose all your data. I am one of those people that save text messages and don't like to lose them. How do I go about backing all that stuff up easily on android as well as my app data for games. I have google backup on. That is the one thing I missed with apple is iCloud backups that I could do a reset and not know I did one all my information was still there. It looked like nothing changed at all.

Find a good back up app for your text messages, back them up, then move the folder to your google drive. I use textra but I don't back up my messages when I do a reset. I suppose I should but I don't. All of the rest of your apps should back up, or most of them anyway. My email does not back up as I do not use G mail but its a snap to reinstall. Supposedly, Google was/is working on something that allows you to back up everything to your Google Drive. Not sure that has been implemented yet. About to do a factory re set myself here as my battery life has really gone to s**t since updating to Oreo last week and it is driving me bonkers

For SMS, use the app SMS Backup and Restore by Carbonite. It works very, very well and will even backup and restore all MMS messages and call logs. I've used it a few times in the past with great success.

That's the one I use because Google has an 'all or nothing' backup system. I just want to backup my SMS nothing else.

I have developer options enabled, but am not seeing the change icon shape option anywhere. Am I just overlooking it, or is there a further step I need to take?

After enabling developer options, long press on your Home Screen > Settings > Change icon shape.

How did you get yours to back up SMS? Mine has always said "Waiting to backup". I even reset it a few days ago and it still won't back up SMS. Has anyone else had the issue where it won't back up SMS messages? How do you fix it?
I already reset it when I went from Nougat to Oreo. And I just sorta accepted that it doesn't back them up.... But then I see the screenshot posted from DMP89145 and they're backed up.... But mine won't for some reason. Everything else backs up fine just not sms.

It may be your messaging app. See previous forum post here.

There's a long topic about a similar issue (call history not backing up) in the Pixel Users section of the Google Product Forums. Although the topic was started because of call history not backing up, other issues are discussed as well, such as SMS failing to backup.

The issue with call history has been resolved for many people, including me, but it's still processing and hasn't reached everyone yet. As for SMS backing up, the phone needs to be on WiFi, idle, and charging. See item #3 in the second "Best Answer" provided by Christiaan (Google employee).

It wouldn't hurt to add your two cents worth to the topic. The newest post is from September 1st, and it's someone who has the issue with SMS not backing up.

Thank you Lilybell2! That is a ridiculous criteria to get text messages to back up. But I do understand that the upload limit can be up to 25mb and whatnot. But I agree with others.. there should be a less strict criteria and/or a "back up now" button. Or it should be more known that the phone needs to be idle, on a charger, and connected to WiFi. I may as well just donate some blood and tap my left foot and spin in a circle too.....

You're welcome. I understand your frustration. I know that when I read that the phone needed to be on WiFi, idle, and charging, I could hardly believe it. I also agree that a "back up now" button would be a sensible option. I understand that some people really do have to be careful of their data, but it just makes no sense to have everyone stuck with such ridiculous restrictions.

Does the data saver "network restrictions" thing for the wifi network need to be turned off also? I had mine off but wasn't sure if it needed to be. Anyways my text messages are backed up finally. I also use sms backup & restore and there's an option for it to save backups to Google drive. So some people may have to do that if they don't have WiFi and whatnot as that's part of the ridiculous criteria to get them to backup.

I have a Verizon Pixel which I am using on TMO. Got the update OTA no issues and working like a champ. Except the emoji icons, I am happy with Oreo.
