Verizon to revamp its data plans starting August 13, ditches phone contracts for new customers (existing customers can still get contracts)

Re: Verizon to revamp its data plans starting August 13, ditches phone contracts

Why do you think it will be difficult to use the Moto Style on Verizon? They've already said it will be compatible, and moto and verizon have had a strong relationship for years.

The Moto Style should work on Verizon's network. I plan on buying one when available.

As I mentioned in the UDP thread, Best Buy is offering the LG G4 for $99 on contract. I think that's a really good deal.

Re: Verizon to revamp its data plans starting August 13, ditches phone contracts

I visited the Verizon corporate store again this afternoon.(the one where the manager is also my HOA president) I went in to look at the phones to decide which one I want to use the upgrade on, before August 13. I'm pretty sure it's either the Galaxy Note 4($99 on 2-year contract) or iPhone 6 16gb(also $99 on 2-year contract).

He said "good news, you can wait and still get discounted 2-year prices even after August 13..." I've known the guy for almost 20 years.(15 of which as his next, next, next-door neighbor, and 6 as our HOA president) Not that I have any reason to not trust him, but I think he might be mistaken, unless he just got some new internal memo from Verizon corporate headquarters?

Should I trust him? Or just order a phone right now(Best Buy method) and see what happens after the 13th? (and return it, if he turns out to be correct)

Droid-Life is indicating that you'll still be able to upgrade after the 13th.

Re: Verizon to revamp its data plans starting August 13, ditches phone contracts

I'm pretty optimistic that existing customers with contracts will be able to keep and renew their contracts. The reps I've spoken to have all been like, "Believe me. Lots of us who work for Verizon want the two-year contracts and discounted upgrades to remain."

Re: Verizon to revamp its data plans starting August 13, ditches phone contracts

I just left the Verizon store and the guy there says that as long as you don't change contracts, upgrades will still be usable even after the 13th. Things only change if you go to the new contract. No need to hurry and use upgrades. You could tell he was repeating what he had been told to say and would not elaborate on anything. Just kept saying that it will all be clear on Thursday when they release the official word on the change. But by then, if he was giving me a load of BS, it will be too late to do anything.

Hopefully this is true as my sister has an upgrade available on the 26th of this month. She'd like to use it if possible.

I wouldn't trust them.. corporate probably gave store managers some kind of incentive to try and prevent ppl from using there upgrades so that after the 13th we'll have no choice but to pay full retail price.
But thats just what i think.

Re: Verizon to revamp its data plans starting August 13, ditches phone contracts

Okay, I spoke to a higher level rep via chat yesterday, and she told me that once my contract is up, I wouldn't be able to renew it. If I wanted to upgrade, I'd have to move to one of the new plans.

HOWEVER, I just got off the phone with a rep, and she told me that they had a meeting about the new plans yesterday. She said that if I'm on a contract now, I'm grandfathered in and am able to renew the contract and get a subsidized phone on the same plan I have now. It's just that if I want to change plans, I'll no longer be offered a contract. I called again and asked another rep who confirmed it.

So, as of now, it looks like if you're currently on a contract and want to continue on that same contract, you can do so.

Yes, everything you say is true BUT they will try like hell to move you to the new plan -- you must stick to your guns and insist that you want to stay on the old plan and upgrade with a discount/2 year contract.

Re: Verizon to revamp its data plans starting August 13, ditches phone contracts

Yes, but keep in mind that the monthly subsidy on device-pricing is still a considerable discount and comes out CHEAPER than the discount on the contract pricing.. but that is ONLY a good phone deal, IF you don't have a better plan now - data, talk, text wise.

Keep in mind, their main thrust in doing all this is to compete with other carriers who do not require contracts so they don't lose potential new customers. If they really want to attract new customers, pricing will do it. So old customers should pay attention and compare closely.

Also, keep in mind that contracts do not "renew". They expire and then we are month-to-month until we are get a new contract.

"monthly subsidy on device-pricing"? If someone is on a device payment plan, there is no subsidy.

As I demonstrated earlier in the thread, contract pricing is considerably less expensive for some of us than the device payment plans. No way in hell will I choose a device payment plan over the savings I'm getting now.

....

Yes there is. $25/mo or $15/mo discount (depending on <> 6gb) off the plan price . That calculates cheaper as I demonstrated above. However, that is PHONE to PHONE savings. In my demonstration, my bottom line total montly plan payment would be about the same as what I pay now. But I would lose data. So for me (and probably most of us reading this thread), there is a downgrade of plan in the mix that was unacceptable. The *PHONE* cost was not the driving factor.

That discount no longer applies as of the 13th. It's not a part of the new plan offerings.

Re: Verizon to revamp its data plans starting August 13, ditches phone contracts

Correct. I was still talking about pre-13th for people who are looking at making a move now. No wonder this thread is all over the place :-) So many variables!!

Even post-13th its close. Not counting losing gigs.

Re: Verizon to revamp its data plans starting August 13, ditches phone contracts

So I better upgrade my phones then before this change takes place as this will be the last time I can upgrade with a 2 year agreement

whats the point. its basically the same amount. why are people scared of the edge program?

Because the legacy nationwide plans included the subsidy, and there is no reduction for off contract. So paying a device payment plan on top of it for some legacy plans would be like paying twice.

Of course if you are on a shared data plan then you get a discount for going off contract, so that is a different situation

I don't think it works like that. I was offerred a device-payment plan only by switching my existing plan to a lesser plan. Hence, I took the contract discount on existing plan.

Re: Verizon to revamp its data plans starting August 13, ditches phone contracts

As much as I'm trying to understand this new plan, I just can't. I have a few questions and hopefully someone can make sense of them and try to answer them lol

1. I'm currently receiving the $25 Edge discount on my line. If I decide to jump to a 2yr contract before Thursday, will I keep this or does it only apply to me if I have the monthly payments?

(Even though the 6s is being released next month, Best Buy is offering the 6 64gb for 199 on a 2yr contract, vs 299 at Verizon)

That sort of leads me to my next question...

2. If I decide to upgrade next month to a 6 or 6s (on payments obviously), will I still be able to keep my $25 discount or will that disappear? I spoke to a rep online this morning who told me I would keep my $25 discount until I changed plans (but I'd keep it as long as I never made a change to my current plan).

3. What's the more smart thing for me to do right now? Best Buy's 199 contract, Edge up early now, or wait until next month (and question whether or not I'll be able to keep my $25).

Yes, the $25 ends up turning into about $5-10 off a month for me, but the new plans would bring our bill up a good $15.

Re: Verizon to revamp its data plans starting August 13, ditches phone contracts

Good question. I asked my rep if I went the device-payment route with the $15 discount, would it continue indefinitely after the 2 years device payments are paid up. I got a big fuzzy verizon-like: "yeah, probably indefinitely".

Re: Verizon to revamp its data plans starting August 13, ditches phone contracts

I'm going to go and ask another rep online and see what answer I get from them. I just don't want to end up without my discount when I upgrade in the future

That's only if they decided to offer it for older plans, and in response to the previous poster.

The current status is that you can keep existing plans, including the edge /no contract discount, even when the new plans take affect.
