Verizon to revamp its data plans starting August 13, ditches phone contracts for new customers (existing customers can still get contracts)

Re: Verizon to revamp its data plans starting August 13, ditches phone contracts

The current status is that you can keep existing plans, including the edge /no contract discount, even when the new plans take affect.

So if I wait until next month to purchase the 6s for my one line, I'll get to keep my $25 (10gb data plan), correct?

(How I'm viewing it is, if I change the plan, then I lose my discount. An upgrade won't mess with my plan...even though they'll try and convince me that's what I need to do)

Yes, you can keep your current plan. I would add that switching to the new plan isn't necessarily a bad deal. If you only have one line you'd pay an extra $5 per month but get an extra 2gb. That's a pretty good price for the data if you think you'll use it.

I actually have 2 lines on my plan - I was referring to my own line. But I do agree that the amount of data would be better for someone on a single line plan. (I actually did look into separating the 2 lines but it ended up being the same price per month)

Hopefully on Thursday, Verizon clarifies many of the questions people have about this change. The rep I chatted with this morning told me that she "doesn't know for sure yet on some of the changes". It's nice to know that the reps also don't know what's going on *end sarcasm*

Anyway, I think this will begin to hurt Apple, Samsung, and a few other brands that have a good reputation. Once people walk into purchase their new 6s or Note 5 and see that the phone isn't $199 or $299 anymore, they'll start to rethink whether a monthly payment of $30 is worth upgrading or not. From a consumer standpoint, if I saw "$30 a month" vs "$199 for 2yrs", I'd be more tempted to purchase the $30 a month because it seems to be "cheaper". This is where Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, etc. make their money - people think it ends up being cheaper because it says a lower cost on the price tag. This doesn't only apply to cell phone companies but other retailers/companies as well.

whats the point. its basically the same amount. why are people scared of the edge program?

Because I would be paying $440 MORE for the Edge plan than I would be with a two-year contract and subsidized phone.

That's not "basically the same amount".

Yes, but your plan is unique; hence, the "loyalty" part. If you were on a current offering, a single line plan for 2 GB is $75 per month with a 2 year contract or $60 a month with phone payments. I bet the difference is significantly less if you were on a current offering.

Well...yeah. That's just it. The reason many people want nothing to do with the Edge program--"scared" is the word you used--is because it would force us to give up our plans that Verizon no longer offers and subject us to what is basically price-gouging. I mean, obviously, people like me are not on current offerings. My contract started two years ago, and many changes have taken place since.

Re: Verizon to revamp its data plans starting August 13, ditches phone contracts

I've been with Verizon for almost 23 years. There have been MANY changes. :) In fact, when I started with them, they weren't even called Verizon. It was Bell Atlantic Mobile and I had a flip phone that displayed phone numbers in red LEDs. :)

Overall, I've been with Verizon for 10+ years (Sprint and T-Mobile before that). My current contract just started almost two years ago. Kinda weird to think it's been that long.

I think you have me confused with someone else as I definitely didn't say scared about being on Edge. Besides, I'm an unlimited user so I know exactly what you are talking about. With that said, it's not price-gouging as we have an option to move to a different company if we want. Straight Talk offers service on Verizon. $45 for 5 GB. We choose to Verizon for a variety of reasons. We may not like the price, but it is a choice that we make.

Yes, and to pay it all upfront. Or eBay, etc.

Next step will involve device swap/activations.

Re: Verizon to revamp its data plans starting August 13, ditches phone contracts

Not if the Galaxy Note 4 was purchased for just $1 with 2-year contract. (Best Buy price a few weeks ago)

Or the $49 special on Galaxy Note 4 right now.... :) Still much cheaper than Edge or any device payment plan. :)

I dont' think Verizon or Samsung will lower the price of the current Galaxy Note 4 from $700 down to $500 or $600 after August 13, so I kind of don't see the point of the new pricing plans...

Where are you finding the Note 4 for $49? The only price I can find is $299 or $249 for refurbished.

Re: Verizon to revamp its data plans starting August 13, ditches phone contracts

I was wondering, no basic phones on these new plans?

We got one basic and two smartphones on More Everything 4GB Loyalty Plan and was doing the math looking to save a few bucks. The basic and one smartphone are out-of-contract. If basic phones were $10 on the new plan that would be great...but I'm guessing that's not the case...

Re: Verizon to revamp its data plans starting August 13, ditches phone contracts

Where the hell is there a 49$ deal for the Note 4 on Verizon?

You only keep the discount if you are out of contract. So if you do Edge, you'll keep the discount. If you sign a two year contract, it goes up to $40. It sounds like you're trying to sign a contract and still keep the $25 discount, which isn't possible

Re: Verizon to revamp its data plans starting August 13, ditches phone contracts

Two of my lines are up for early edge and I'm doing it today, before the new rip-off plans come into effect. Adding 2 new S6 will keep me at the same amount I'm paying now whereas under the new pricing I would be paying $30 more a month.

Re: Verizon to revamp its data plans starting August 13, ditches phone contracts

The clarification that I've gotten is that the subsidies will continue for existing customers and that the pricing affects new customers only (or customers who wish to switch over to the newer simpler plans)

Re: Verizon to revamp its data plans starting August 13, ditches phone contracts

This may have been answered but I didn't read every reply. I'm still on an Unlimited plan. I've been buying my phones on eBay, at Best Buy, etc to keep my plan. I assume I can continue to do that even with these changes? Thanks.
