Verizon vs Unlocked

I have an unlocked Note 9 on VZW. No problems at all except updates run a month or two behind the carrier model.

I wonder if it could affect 5G reception though?
I've been reading some are flashing carriers firmware on they're unlocked phone, you don't have to do that do you? What's the point of getting unlocked if you're going to do that, except to be able to move from carrier to carrier.

I have the note 10+ non 5G now with Verizon, will I just have to stick my card in and good to go or does 5G use different cards. Thanks to any info from anyone

I never had an unlocked phone either but my carrier is AT&T will I retain USB Tethering and Mobile Hotspot on an unlocked phone?

I’m doing it for myself, mainly because Verizon is not offering the base s20. I don’t like the size of the larger ones, and I’m not holding out hope that the trade in offers will be as good when Verizon releases its version, if it ever does at all; my understanding is that the mmWave antennas and boards are too big to fit in the smaller s20, which is why they are only in the s20+ (I think this was from a Verge or Tom’s Hardware article), so also not hopeful that it would ever be released or what compromises (battery perhaps) will exist when it does. Remember the first gen 4G phones - those things were huge for their day (although normal now).

Saw on Reddit, looks like Verizon has disabled the Duo integration in the Samsung dialer. What a surprise , crappy carriers and Samsung bending over backwards.

Hey I know not a big deal and anyways doesn't affect me on unlocked model but c'mon Samsung take control of your phones.

Not surprised after all it is Verizon we're talking about. They always find something to disable smh.

I imagine the following statement from the article I read is why they did that, they don't want to provide phone support for a feature that won't work unless the other party has duo also. I don't do video calls so it wouldn't make be go unlocked versus Verizon variant. Anything else you can think of that the unlocked gives us that Verizon took away

"Do note that for Duo integration to work, your contacts will have to set up Duo. "

That's only if they don't have an android. If they have a Google account on their phone you can call them with duo and that can video chat without the app installed.

Yeah I'm not saying someone go unlocked or Verizon based on this, I'm just saying the carriers suck and keep messing with OEM features. Give me a break about don't want to support, how about remove that Samsung quick share feature as well since it only works within Samsung phones? I can probably list so many different features which isn't compatible with every other phone so why not let's go remove them all

And I don't mind people choosing carrier or unlocked, they should do what's best for them. I just like ranting about these carriers whenever I get a chance since they are horrible

Well like I mentioned if its sim unlocked and you flash the unlocked version its basically same as you go in best buy and buy the unlocked version .

But how do you flash? Haven’t done it in a while. Is it done using Odin? Where can I go for steps? XDA?

Oh sorry , you download Odin prince comsey , can get from xda forums, sammobile website the firmware or samfirm tool and extract the 4 files and load them into Odin 4 slots

Here's a problem I've not seen addressed. I have an S20 Ultra running on a prepaid Verizon plan and I cannot get voicemail. I spent over an hour on Verizon's tech support line but they could not get it running. All I get is a recording of "this call cannot be completed as dialed, please try again later." When I try to install visual voice mail I get a message that the "data network is unavailable." Verizon says these things happen with new phones. Well, that's just not acceptable. I'm sure I could go the third party route with TrueCaller or YouMail, but I shouldn't have to do that. Of course, Verizon urged me to switch to a post-paid unlimited plan, but I really don't want to almost triple my bill. I run on wi-fi most of the time. I should add that this is an unlocked phone purchased directly from Samsung and not from Verizon. Everything else seems to be working just fine. Anyone else having this issue?

I flashed the U1 firmware to my Verizon device and noticed that it jumps from LTE to LTE+ in the status bar. Wasn't sure what they may mean but on Verizon it just shows the 4G LTE icon. Anyone else notice anything like this or know what that may indicate?

Appreciate that. Wonder why it bounces back and forth? I flashed back to Verizon just to see what it would do. Maybe I'll flash the U1 back on and see if it continues.
On my Note 10+ unlocked with tmobile sim it says lte+
