Very disappointed in the camera

I'll be eagerly waiting your response.. :)

Two big issues for me are the screen and the camera.

I can learn to live with the pentile screen, even though I'm not happy about it.. (tested it at the store for a while... ugh..)

But add a bad camera to the mix and I'll have to wait for the next one...(I briefly played with the camera at the store also...I was not too impressed)

Moto has never had great cameras on their droids, not sure why anyone was expecting anything different.

I'm not taking sides on any camera, I just want to offer some tips that will apply to any camera.

In comparing any cameras as long as you are doing the same thing on each one you are being fair. Shoot the same subject in the same light at the same distance. On a tripod if possible or with a phone, on a counter top or table. Then view the images @ 100% on a decent display.

That said, as a professional photographer when asked for basic advice I always say the following.
  • Clean the lens cover on a cell phone before shooting. Your hands and face have been all over it.
  • Movement is the enemy, and in a very large way. Learn how to brace yourself or how keep completely still as possible through the shutter pausing a tad after the shutter release indicates it has finished. On some cameras the sensor may still be processing. This is a big part of shooting that we discipline ourselves in doing even with the most expensive cameras.

And last, if you compare one cameras image performance using pictures taken at the beach, to anothers images taken at a wedding, I see the comparison as invalid.

Until I would have seen a comparison test done as stated, I would not take any off hand opinions to heart.

vignette appears to have a mind of its own ... the screen orientation seems to be stretched, at times, and doesn't rotate with the phone, though the pic that's taken will come out oriented the way you were holding the phone ..... WEIRD!!!! i've only taken a few pics, with flash .. they are not iphone 4 quality but good nonetheless ... an issue i've noticed, is that a pic i uploaded to facebook, looked like it had been shot through a screen door!!!

Yup the camera is what made my decision not to buy the Bionic. Shame that Moto keeps not focusing on the camera sensor quality because I love everything else about the Bionic and was wanting to get one. All of the pics I've seen (except the peach pic) have been disappointing as well as the video somewhat. Also the reviews all confirmed my thoughts.

iPhone 4 still has the best camera of Verizon's available phones and until one does better, I'm stuck with it. I seriously thought about buying a Canon Elph 300 to keep in my pocket so I could get the Bionic, but decided I'd rather just wait for a phone with a camera the likes of the MyTouch 4g or Nokia N8.

I was wondering, on my dinc the photos always looks like crap on the phone untill i put it on the computer and blew it up to its full potential, im pretty sure this is the same on the bionic, the screen can only do so much but if you act put it on a computer and put it 1:1 scale im willing to bet itll look a lot better

as stated before. Under the camera setting you need to uncheck the widscreen 6mg, so it will change to 8mg.

went to the Verizon store to buy the bionic took one photo, put it down and left.

currently own a DROID X and the 3.2 MP cam on my BBTour was light years ahead.

Carl Zeiss is a brand name. It doesn't mean much. The fact that cameras with Zeiss lenses that are crap exist, and amazing cameras that don't have one, proves that to be true.

Just saying storm had the best camera and maybe it was because it had an after market lense maker stamped on the lense. Maybe they made ot very well for the storm I don't know.

I have yet to see a better picture come from another cell phone camera including iPhone 4.

Not sure what or how they built it but they got it right. Another few more hours and I'll have my bionic so I can comment on that too.

I'll agree my Storm takes damn good photos, but better than my iPhone 4? Debatable.

I am also a photographer, trust me this camera is awful. Colors are bad and its autofocus is slow.

If you want an awesome camera BUY A CAMERA. Problem solved.

Yea except people don't like having both a phone and a camera in their pocket, idiot. I got an idea, if you don't have anything valuable to contribute to a thread or don't like the topic, don't bother entering it.

And also to your point, the technology absolutely exists to have an awesome camera in a phone, look at the MyTouch 4G, Nokia N8 amongst others. The photos they take are on par with a point and shoot, thus replacing the need for one. How about Moto starts putting effort into their smartphone cameras. I've had several of their Android devices, and they obviously put little effort into the camera.

That's okay though, I speak with my wallet and their lack of attention to the photo capability of the Bionic cost them a sale from me, as have others.

Its not that I want an awesome camera, trust me I have those and L glass to go with it. I want a semi seventy camera with an autofocus that works how it should and good colors.

Camera on my Thunderbolt is great. Love my phone

sent from my Thunderbolt

I agree with that. The Thunderbolt camera kills this crummy Bionic camera. I wish I would have played with the Bionic a lot longer in the store. It didn't seem to be as bad on the display model. I've had the OG Droid and the Bionic now and Motorola seems to put out some crappy cameras on their phones. The slow autofocus is unreal on this thing.
