Video calling: Qik vs Fring vs Tango vs ???

I have the iPod Touch 4 and I use Facetime to chat with my parents in Canada and it blows anything that Android has to offer at the moment - much better than Qik with my Epic. It really is that smooth. I also tried Skype with the iPod Touch after they updated the app to make video calls and it was passable at best. Say what you want about Apple, but they sure did a great job with their Facetime app.

Haven't tried out the other video chat programs on Androi, but from some of the comments on here they seem a little buggy.

FaceTime hands down kills all of these apps. A big part of this is because it requires wifi which is usually a strong signal and therefore it works well. However if you jailbreak an iPhone and enable it to use FaceTime over 3G, it ends up with the same issues as tango, fring etc.

I agree about the bait and switch. I was able to jump on with sprint through my company and try the evo 4G and face chat. Great phone, but even on 4G the face chat is just as bad as any app on 3G. I guess the 4G networks just aren't where they need to be to handle the data load that video chat requires. Which is of course why FaceTime is programmed to only work with wifi.
No clue why ATT is waiting for 4G. If my memory serves me correctly they were one of the last to jump on 3G, and in doing so were the fastest 3G. Network size aside, maybe ATT is waiting for 4G to again be the fastest?

I give it another 12 mos and face chat will be where we want it.

I'm using ooVoo now. It lets me talk Phone to PC easily. 3G is a little choppy, but gets the job done. Lets me say goodnight to the kids when I am working nights at the firehouse. Also, my wife and I are going to Jamaica, so we can chat with kids while we are gone!

Really useful info, gonna try oovoo.

Apple had better PC to PC calling at first as well, using ichat, before the other companies caught up a year or so later. It helps that the control the hardware so strictly, and can optimize for that, I think.

Android will get there, I'm sure.

I have been using ooVoo it usually works well and is the only one that works computer to phone. It can get choppy with slow connections but is mostly smooth for me.

If you are rooted/romed I believe yahoo messanger has sharper and no lagging video conferencing than qik I've tried. You may give a shot (it's free) :)

My gf and I both got epics so we could video call. But since Yahoo/Tango don't work sound wise without 2.2, its been pretty moot. She will not root/install custom ROMs. I'm waiting on the official release, not for me, but for her.

many are reporting their success/failure with different apps going from phone to PC but I am mostly concerned with Epic to Epic performance which has always been FAIL. Can someone report onphone to phone with ooVoo?

Just started ooVoo Epic to PC video chat and it's great (only tried wifi so far). Can't comment on phone-to-phone as the gf doesn't have an Epic.

Hey all, my wife just bought an Epic, and I have had mine for a few months now, so we'll try ooVoo tonight and report back :)

Um, ok... I cannot find a working link to download ooVoo for my phone. The link I did find, when I click on it, I get a message saying "Not Found: The requested item could not be found".

I also tried searching for it in the Android Market, but it isn't there.

Does anyone have a working link?

i don't think it will work for the epic on 2.1.

Looks like it was pulled from the Market, that's where I got it from. Works fine on stock Epic 2.1.

Just saw on the ooVoo forums that they released a new version a couple of days ago, and it requires Android 2.2. I just missed being able to download, unless I root my phone... which at this point, I'm about ready to do. Kind of getting sick of waiting on Samsung.

Fring in EVO 4G & iPhone 4

I saw many comments about bad quality with Fring and I have some friends with iPhones, Droid X (you need to be in front of a mirror in order to let us see your face) & EVO 4G and all of us including my self when we're using (4G or) wifi (no crappy speeds) Fring does the job with video/voice pretty good as FaceTime (knowing FaceTime only works with wifi).

"...Next!"

Finally tried Qik, very let down. OoVoo is incompatible with my gf's t-mob Galaxy S 4G. Currently using Tango, which is pretty decent. Will have to try out Fring next.

nice find Caleb I'll look into that.
I use Tango currently, and was sad skype would not work for this feature.
