Voice coming from phone in the middle of the night

Last night at about 2:30 am I woke up to voices coming from my phone. It sounded like a man talking in a foreign (Middle Eastern?) language in a room with background noise. I closed all the background apps and I could still hear the voices. They only stopped when I turned down the volume. Any idea what this might be?

This just happened twice on my daughter's iPhone. Once earlier today, and once just a few minutes ago. She couldn't make out what the man's voice was saying earlier but she heard a word whispered in a foreign language the second time. Im wondering if her phone might be hacked?

My guess would be a freak effect in which the phone is picking up some radio transmission or other.
