VZW becomes less appealing by the day

This morning I realized that Verizon changed its policy, of course without properly notifying its customers, and removed all early discount dates for anyone with contracts expiring beginning January 2014. This is me ... All of a sudden I saw my discount day change from September 2013 to January 2014.

Oh, but now Verizon will let you go into a crowded Verizon store and buy a new phone outright at any time and pay for it interest free (I am sure depending on your credit report) for 12 months and pay a $2 a month service charge for the privilege of not extending your contract.

I guess it is a good thing I bought a battery pack yesterday while at the Verizon store because I am going to be stuck with this Rezound for an extra four months.

To be honest, in some ways i prefer the new policy. As one who grandfathered their unlimited data, i'd rather have the option of paying for the full price phone over time and keeping my unlimited data than renewing a contract and losing the unlimited data. See the link:

I am not sure though if all phones will be included in this "payment plan" option. As well, who knows the exact criteria for who will be allowed to purchase this way.

A consumer would be better off buying the phone outright from Best Buy with Best Buy's no-interest credit card, rather than give greedy Verizon another $24 in service fees.

If you have a family plan with at least one non unlimited line, just transfer the upgrade to a non unlimited line and activate the new phone on the non unlimited line.

True, but in my case, I pay less than $45 for my share of the family plan with unlimited unthrottled 4GLTE. This is the cheapest that I could find with a solid 4GLTE network. I do have to do a bit more work by transferring my upgrade to a non unlimited line, but still get to use my upgrade.

Even if I didn't, I think that the $45 that I am paying is well worth it. Yes, there are cheaper options, but you get what you pay for

Best option would be to wait for a sale and buy the phone and pay etf. For example, a few months ago, you could have gotten the note 2 for $50 on contract, then pay $350 etf and one days service for $405 compared to the $700 retail price.

N/M ... been away from the news lately. Since I have unlimited data still, I will likely upgrade this way. This might keep me from switching to T-Mo someday.

Wow....didn't think of that! Even the galaxy s4 is $200, plus $350 ETF would be less than the $650 retail they are charging. Hmmmmmm how long till ETFs start going up?

Just make sure that whatever carrier you choose has good service at all the places that you are going to need it.

Verizon is an awful company. I have had awful experiences with them that may lead to litigation soon. You are better off anywhere but Verizon.

Verizon is claiming that the upgrade eligibility information is not part of the contract.
