But do you get to keep you old number if you do it this way? Or do you have 2 get a new 1?

Best option would be to wait for a sale and buy the phone and pay etf. For example, a few months ago, you could have gotten the note 2 for $50 on contract, then pay $350 etf and one days service for $405 compared to the $700 retail price.
