To each his own on user interface but iOS is much more consistent and thus overall easier to use even if you don't prefer it. I have always wanted Android to be more like iOS from that perspective. The way the back button is now in ICS, its better but i noticed some apps still were inconsistent in how they handled it.
But more importantly, I spent about an hour at the Samsung store tonight - actually was watching Zach Honig so his video review for Engadget - playing with the GN. They had 5 on display and the tMobile version of the Gal II were also right next to them so I got a reeeaalll good comparison between those two phones, my iPhone and my Thunderbolt. Here are some impressions;
- The phone is damn big but when compared to the Thunderbolt, its really not much bigger. Those on screen buttons are amazing. Its much lighter than the TB and a but lighter than the iPhone.
- The Samsung guys all have the GN but the HSPDA version. Compared to the Verizon one and its def noticeably thinner but that said, this phone is thin. The bump at the bottom is so subtle it really looks nice.
- In a speed test, on wifi, between all 4 phones, the GII actually had the best throughput followed by the iPhone, GN and then the TB. They were all relatively close which is what you would expect.
- In a typing comparison, the new ICS shines. Combined with the bigger screen and its the best experience period. The iPhones text prediction is awesome (but doesn't mean everyone likes the autocorrect) but this phone has a better interface and is overall easier to use.
- Screen is reeeaallly good. Blows the TB out of the water. Looks similar to the GII. Compared to the iPhone its a little hard because the screen is 1 inch smaller. There is def some over saturation going on on the GN and in some more colorful scenes it looks silly. But the size of the screen combined with the quality is just so nice its really hard not to get mesmerized by it.
- As the Verge mentioned, you can turn off LTE to save battery.
- The camera really just is subpar. Its not even that the low light pictures were that bad (better than the tB but not even close to the iPhone and not as good as GII) its that they are all blurry. I took 25 pics, even rested my arms on the table, and they never seemed clear. Its a real downer because a better camera and i am making it my daily phone for sure.
- The verizon branding is subtle. Its of course there but the grey on carbon fiber washes it out some. I don't see it as a problem.
- It was running 4.0.1 so not the final 4.1. That said it was mostly snappy but it lagged a few times and was still a bit choppy scrolling between some screens. Not sure why it so hard to replicate the smoothness of iOS when it comes to this. But its much better than on the TB which at times drives me insane.
Again, everyone knows most of this so i am really just trying to do more of a comparison. FWIW that Samsung guy admitted he knew nothing for sure but says they all think its launching next week.
