Vzw to kill grandfathered unlmtd data plans with 4g upgrades

taking JUDES, advice, here is the email I wrote to Verizon:

Dear CEO,

I am writing to complain about the upcoming cancelation of the "unlimited plan" for your current 4G customers that where grandfathered in before the July 7th, 2011 deadline.

I along with my ex--wife and her family as well as my sister, mother and father and daughter are all loyal Verizon customers. I have had my account for almost 8 years and I love the service I receive. What I don't like is the constant changing of plans...not because of "feature" enhancement or anything like that, no, I am upset because the price goes up because of greed. You are going to penalize the faithful customers because we already have 4G. We abided by the rules and where promised a bill of goods....now, when we go to upgrade to a new device, we will be kicked off the "unlimted plan" and be forced into a tiered plan. Some months I use a lot of data, some months I don't. I currently have 4 people on my account and 2 of those are unlimted data plans. I can't afford more than I am paying already...if I get kicked off the unlimted plan, I will have no other option to take my business to another provideer that offers an unlimited plan for a SET monthly rate.

I ask that you rethink the impact that this will have to the loyal an exisiting customers. I understand NEW customers will be forced onto the new tiered plan, but for the ones that have been through all the 4G outages over the last year, don't throw us under the big RED bus!

Thank you for your time.

Here is the response I got

Thank you for contacting Verizon Wireless via our website, my name is Elaine. I understand your concern in regards to if the unlimited data plan will be eliminated and I will be happy to assist you. We value your business and would like to remain as your provider.

As we have stated publicly, Verizon Wireless has been evaluating its data pricing structure for some time; however, we are not announcing new plans at this time, nor any policy changes for our customers on unlimited data plans. We will share specific details of the plans and any related policy changes well in advance of their introduction, so customers will have time to evaluate their choices and make the best decisions for their wireless service.

Translation: "We are going to implement the plan eventually to eliminate the old plans because we are money hungry and greedy.....and we can get away with it". I know I shouldn't get to mad, but it just erks me when a company does this because something becomes popular. I am happy paying for my unlimited plan, heck I would even be willing to pay a little more for it....but to eliminate it and force you into a tiered plan or force you to buy a phone outright in order to keep the plan.

I know for me, I will be looking at my average DATA use and making an INFORMED decision as to which direction I want to go. I know there are apps that can do it, but verizon better have a way of shutting down the data when not using it.

Where my data usage comes in is when I flash to a new ROM and then it auto-download....looks like I will be shutting that off.

Hey, look at the bright side; at least we still have a choice to keep grandfathered unlimited data by either sticking with our current phone or purchasing the next at full retail. They could've gone the other way and forced us into tiered. Or worse, go the power company route and you pay for what you use! Gulp...

They can take away our updates but they can never take our dataaaaaa!

until you upgrade that is.

A shared data plan might not be a bad idea for me. My wife wouldn't wait for the Droid 4 LTE and got a Droid 3 (3G and wifi only). I'm paying for unlimited data grandfathered on my TBolt and her phone which will never do LTE. Not to mention, anything she downloads she does from home via wifi so I'm already effectively paying double for my LTE usage.

I have several apps that I don't think twice about at the moment that update or download new data as scheduled or as needed because I still have an unlimited plan. I average about 12GB/month cell and another 6GB/month via wifi usage to keep all my podcasts, vodcasts and widgets up to date along with streaming from a variety of sources on the TBolt.

All of these apps have the ability to be set to update only when connected to wi-fi. Yes. I'm lazy by letting them all rock and roll as they please currently but I could easily force the majority of them to do their updating/downloading when I'm home on wi-fi overnight and only use my data plan for a few widgets and streaming while on LTE leaving plenty of room for GPS usage and occasional web surfing on the go. All I have to do is adjust my habits. For instance, I use PodTrapper as my podcast/vodcast app and only allow it to keep the last 4 episodes of a show. I could easily bump that up to 12 per show with wi-fi-only download settings since I've rarely exceeded 10GB used on my 32GB SD card (I went over when I ported a couple of movies using Handbrake and copied them onto the card).

Verizon may force me to change my habits a bit but they aren't going to sour the whole experience of a smart phone with some data restrictions.

Thanks to those who are emailing Verizon. The more the better. I agree...it is greed.
I am just me. No sharing. I am not a fan of the other carriers but seems to me I might have to consider it. I might pay retail for a phone but my bolt is fine. Been the best phone.

It is an upgrade because you are changing phones with signing a new contract.....unless you buy outright and not upgrade

Actually, if you opt to buy your next phone at the subsidize price I.E 199.99 with a new
2 year contract you will lose your unlimited plan.

ha yeah. Unless you find a way to hack Verizon's systems you're screwed if you upgrade.
