Waiting for Local Storage

After due consideration, I'm waiting for a Nexus 7 equivalent with an SD card slot.

I can't use a device that is only cloud based. I need local storage.

I know that this flies in the face of the Nexus philosophy, but first vendor to offer a Nexus 7 equivalent with standard JB and SD storage gets my bucks.

"Nexus 7 equivalent" is no simple task. Use stickmount for your storage needs. It's not elegant, but it works.

Why do you need local storage only? Do you leave your home for weeks at a time, and you are never in a wifi environment? I don't need an entire season of a tv show on my Nexus 7, because I won't watch the whole season before I am home again. For $5 a month I have 100 gb of Google Drive and can access a great chunk of my files whenever I reach a wifi area, hell in a pinch I can go to McDonalds lol.

THAT's why you need local storage. You gonna stop at McD's every 100 miles or so and listen to some tunes? A movie for the kiddies? Gotta find a wifi so I can delete some files or uninstall some apps and download some different ones from the "cloud".....Take your time eating that Happy Meal, Daddy hasn't finished streaming his show yet.

Oh that app looks pretty nice. What 25MB? Hmmm, let me see what I can get rid of........

Nexus 7 already has USB-OTG, and with rooting that will include mountable storage. Google will come out with that update pretty quickly so rooting won't be needed, IMO.

So there ya go. Nexus 7 with equivalent SD storage. Run out and buy one. But do yourself a favor and get the 16GB one for $50 more.

The part that is baffling to me is that anyone would be willing to pay $50 more for 8 gb of storage. When then get 5 gb of Google Drive and 20,000 free song uploads to Google Music. Your 64 mb argument made the need for 8000 more mb argument kind of weird. All I ever said was put what you need for the day, or car trip on the device. Once you get to where you are going you can get on wifi and remove and change anything else you want from Google Drive.

This I just don't see. Yes, $50 for 8GB seems expensive, considering I can buy a 32GB SD card for that or less. But that 8GB will be huge in NOT having to constantly uninstall apps, delete files etc. just to add some different ones. I understand you think it's no big deal, but to me that would be a royal PITA.

I can answer that - When someone (me) has had horrid experience with Google Drive's speed. I can stream Netflix, Hulu+ and Youtube flawlessly from the furthest reaches of my property but Google Drive takes hours to upload a 700MB video and then over an hour to download it before it will play.

I ordered the 16GB and will transfer files via the USB to the Nexus. If I need more space in the future and the external device feature is never turned on the Nexus I will either root to get it or use a Wi-Drive as an extended storage / media player option.

What about the Asus transformer series. It is an un skinned version of ICS with an sd card slot etc. No updates from Google though. It is about as close as you can get.

Those of us that use alot of storage in our devices will just have to make due with what we get. For a device like this, i am very willing to sacrifice the number of movies and shows i can keep at a time.

Also 16gb is quite a bit of storage. One downloaded movie runs usually around 700mb, so if you do the math that is a lot of movies you can store just on the internal storage.

People who keep saying they have to delete / re-add (micro-manage) files to make space I don't think ever used Google Cloud services.

You "make available offline" or it stays in the cloud. Simple.

According to the AC review, there is more like 12gb of storage if you get the 16gb version. If you get the 8gb one, it's more like 4.5gb of storage. Let's see:

2gb NOVA 3
3gb of video for the trip to California
2.5gb of Tegra THD games
1gb of regular apps
.5gb of offline maps

You're out of room if you get the 8gb version and if you get the 16gb version, you have 4gb remaining. See what I mean?

Yeah i guess. I didn't think of all the preloaded stuff and system files that takes up room and can't be deleted. As long as you can use a usb stick though i think it will be alright

I wouldn't be surprised if google or asus started selling a micro USB to SD Card adapter or something like that after realizing that people are willing to pay for it.

What happened to "do no evil"? Sounds like something Apple would do to make more money. They could start selling their adapters but I would also like them to actually make it possible for us to use any old adapter instead of theirs. It would be beneficial for the people who don't want to root to use stickmount.

Hey, it is a business... if demand is there, they will do. Being a Nexus device, I highly doubt that it'll be the only adapter that works. But that wouldn't stop them from selling it and making some extra bucks on the side.

Here's the thing, wifi is EVERYWHERE except in your car. And they sell devices to convert cell phone data to 802.11 wifi. If you stop at McDonalds you will have Wifi, you get to the hotel you have wifi, stop at Ikea to shop, you have wifi.

The only time you don't is when you are driving and I hope you put the tablet down to do that. Unless you have one of those Google cars that it.;)

Well you can always use your wifi hotspot on your cell. That's basically the only thing i have my cell for, is the free hotspot to use with my nexus 7. Granted it's crappy 3g but it gets the job done :-)
