Waiting for Local Storage

I don't think you're going to see a Nexus 7 with an SD Card anytime soon. If that's a deal breaker, you'd probably do wise to look at the Galaxy Tab 2 7 inch model.

Humm that's a good idea. Wonder when naked JB will be available for the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0?

So long as you go with the wifi model I can't imagine it's going to be long. Obviously that's an assumption on my part at this point.

Samsung shouldn't have to do much to get Touchwiz up and running on 4.1, and bypassing the carrier approval/deployment cycle will allow them to move more quickly. Similar to how the wifi edition of the Xoom received ICS 2 months before the 4g one did.

edit: I suppose I should mention though. The Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 doesn't have the specs the N7 does. The processor is only dual core (clocked at 1ghz) and the screen is lower res. Really comes down to what you want.

Here is a crazy idea, if you are going camping how about leave your technology at home or in the cars. Enjoy allowing companies to rape you for $50 for 8 gb of storage.

EDIT:
The 8 Gb Unit has 5.74 gb of storage left. So stop saying 4 gb.

Here is some more fun info for you

Ah, my mistake. I got the 4.5 number from here> http://www.androidcentral.com/nexus-7-review

Just scroll down to the storage part of the review.

4.5gb is with some apps already installed. Sorry about the confusion.

If 8 GB isn't enough, 16 probably won't be either. If this is the case it seems to me as if that $50 extra would be better spent on a high speed 64 gb usb stick and a 1" micro USB cable. At least that was my thought when I preordered the 8 GB model.

Perhaps. However, if like on my phone, there are apps that won't let you move to external storage, then there is that. If you do move apps to external, then you have to make sure you carry not only data and media "sticks" but also the one that has the apps on the external. Then I think you will be swapping those more than necessary.

Sorry, but I don't think the extra $50 is considered being "raped" per qd's post, nor do I think it's exhorbitant. There are other costs involved in manufacturing the device with the added memory, not just the cost of the memory itself. To me, it's money well spent.

OK, 5.74GB. An extra GB. If it works for you it works. Leave my technology home? You mean the mountain bikes? Technology there. The tents? Sleeping bags? Cook Stove? Technology there too. The truck we get there with? Don't even. The hiking boots and clothing we wear are made and designed with some sort of technology.

I suppose when you take your family camping you just throw a skin over everyone, walk out the back door and sleep next a big rock? Find flint or rub sticks to get the ol' fire started? LOL.

This will be my last reply to ya on this subject. Too frustrating talking to a brick wall. :p

Go with your 8GB device in peace. Glad it works out for ya.

Here's a cut-n-paste from the nexus review out on this site:

And here's where things may turn ugly. The Nexus 7 is available in either an 8GB or 16GB configuration. There is no microSD card slot. There is no USB external storage option. The 8GB option, out of the box and with the bare minimum of apps (you can see my list of installed apps below) leaves you with 4.46GB of free space. The 16GB option should leave about 12GB free (based on my calculation). That's without any of my space-hogging games installed, which take upwards of 750MB each.

They could have easily added a micro-sd card slot but they went the Apple route with closing it down and charging fools $50 for low amounts of storage upgrades

Enjoy your expensive 8 gb upgrade so you can horde a bunch of apps and video you won't possible use in any one or more given days.

I agree that it wasn't nice of google to do that. Business is business however, and 8gb if anything, can be peace of mind.

So, if I get a Nexus 7, and I get one of these bad boys:

and connect it to the Nexus 7 and then connect one of these bad boys
Elecom-MR-SMC06-Dual-Slot-microSD-SDHC-Card-Reader.jpg

will I be able to copy movies, series, etc to the nexus and watch them there?

Yes and no. There is a program called stickmount which lets you do this. However, to install stickmount, you need to root the Nexus 7.

Man... I really don't know, I want a tablet to watch series and browse, those are my two main uses, so having memory is very important to me, that's why I would go with the galaxy tab 2 7.0, which I would root to get rid of the samsung bullsh*t. I don't what to pick, the nexus 7 or the galaxy tab 2, the nexus 7 has a better screen which to me would be awesome, but why would I want a better screen if I don't have the storage for the series in the first place? I really need to know what the nexus 7 can do and how to have more storage, I already searched for the stickmount but din't find anything especific...

Thanks, from this here's what I conclude:

Google Nexus 7 vs Galaxy Tab 2 7.0

Nexus 7 has a better screen.
Nexus 7 has a better CPU.
Nexus 7 has Jelly Bean, and since it is a google tablet it will get updates faster than everything else, because google, unlike samsung, doesn't take 6 months to release updates... So, with the galaxy tab 2 7.0 you are pretty much stuck with ICS.
The galaxy tab 2 7.0 has a card slot, if storage is important to you than go for the galaxy tab 2 7.0, but if you are wiling to root the Nexus 7, have memory sticks with you and then when you want to see a movie having to copy the movie to the Nexus 7 to be able to watch it, go for the Nexus 7, cause that's the only downside I see.

You just hit the nail on the head. Kudos.

I can answer that - When someone (me) has had horrid experience with Google Drive's speed. I can stream Netflix, Hulu+ and Youtube flawlessly from the furthest reaches of my property but Google Drive takes hours to upload a 700MB video and then over an hour to download it before it will play.

I ordered the 16GB and will transfer files via the USB to the Nexus. If I need more space in the future and the external device feature is never turned on the Nexus I will either root to get it or use a Wi-Drive as an extended storage / media player option.

Don't have any experience with GDrive, but my entire music collection (14gb) took about 12-13 hours to upload to google play. Which IMO isn't that long, seeing how my internet isn't that great.
