Waiting for Local Storage

Yes and no. There is a program called stickmount which lets you do this. However, to install stickmount, you need to root the Nexus 7.

Using sd adapters and stickmount could I watch movies from a sdcard or would I have to download them to the Nexus 7 first?

A tablet to me is a companion device for quick use. I don't feel that there isn't a tablet that could replace my laptop especially for traveling for a period of time. If I'll be away for an extended period of time I'll have my laptop with 500GB of media which I can transfer media when needed to my tablet.

And some of us use their tablets on planes. Google cloud really isn't an option at that altitude.

With 4.1.1 rooted and with stickmout you can play videos without having to copy them to your nexus, and although I think this could already be done in 4.1 I don't think you could use the default player like you can now with 4.1.1.

In particular, it would be good to view and store camera pics (from SD and CF cards) without requiring a computer/cloud. A separate device is fine (eg card reader attached via WiFi or bluetooth) because I'm already carrying camera gear.
In general, it's disappointing there is no support for removable storage.
